Continue ReadingThe next high school season is still at least six months off. Summer ball is in a temporary holding pattern. But we can look ahead to 2020-2021 to project who will be the stars to watch at the small schools in Northeast Kansas. (picks are listed by their grade next school year)
NE KS Too-Early All Stars, First Team:
Guards: Dawson Zenger Dawson Zenger 6'1" | CG Rock Creek | 2021 State KS and Devan McEwan
Forwards: Nahcs Wahwassuck Nahcs Wahwassuck 6'5" | CG Royal Valley | 2022 State KS and Tanner Hecht Tanner Hecht 6'5" | CG Wamego | 2021 State KS
Center: Dayton Logan
Guard – Dawson Zenger Dawson Zenger 6'1" | CG Rock Creek | 2021 State KS , senior, Rock Creek:
If you want to start with a scorer, look no further than the bucket machine Zenger. He averaged 25.5 points per game and was named 1st team all 3A. Rock Creek went 19-3 and was ranked #2 in the state at the end of the regular season. They were felled in sub-state by the 3A Cinderella that was St. Marys. But Zenger was electric in the post-season. He went for 30 against Santa Fe Trail and for 33 in the loss to St. Marys.
Guard – Devan McEwan, senior, Lebo:
McEwan was second-team all 1A. The leading scorer in the Lyon County League, the 6-foot-2 junior averaged 19.6 averaged after scoring 18 points per contest as a sophomore. He will lead a loaded Lebo squad, which has already made back-to-back trips to state, next year.
Forward – Nahcs Wahwassuck Nahcs Wahwassuck 6'5" | CG Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , junior, Royal Valley:
Wahwassuck could be listed as a guard here, but in order to get both Zenger and McEwan on the first team, he’ll be listed as a forward. He has already been a leader for two years. He was a first-team all-leaguer as a freshman, and was one of the best players in the region as a sophomore. The 6-foot-4 floor general can do it all. He led the Panthers to a 19-1 regular season mark by scoring 16.6 points per game. But his game is well-rounded, and with his size, he’s a matchup nightmare. Look for Wahwassuck to be one of the state’s best players the next two seasons.
Forward – Tanner Hecht Tanner Hecht 6'5" | CG Wamego | 2021 State KS , senior, Wamego:
Hecht was honorable mention all 4A. The slender 6-foot-5 Hecht can shoot and scores in bunches. He tallied 26 three different times last season. He averaged 15.2 points and 7.1 boards as a junior.
Center – Dayton Logan, senior, Mission Valley:
Because of his size, Logan gets the nod at center on the first team of the Northeast Kansas Too-Early All Stars. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Logan is a load. He averaged 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds for the Vikings as a junior. He is just as likely to knock down 3-pointers as he is to pound it down in the low post.
