Continue ReadingAthlete comparisons have become a popular tool in the world of scouting, recruiting, and draft coverage. It’s one of the best ways to get a feel for a player’s game. While no comparison is perfect, it is still a worthwhile practice. With that in mind, I’ve come up with NBA comps for some of the best prospects I’ve seen this year. Keep in mind that these are not projections and be on the lookout for more NBA comparison articles in the near future!
Cason Wallace Cason Wallace 6'4" | CG Richardson | 2022 State #6 Nation TX – 2022 6’3 Shooting Guard Richardson HS
NBA Comp – Luka Doncic
Doncic has quickly become one of the best young stars in the NBA. Even those who projected that he would become a stud in the pros couldn’t have predicted his meteoric rise to success in the association. He can impact the game with his scoring, passing, and rebounding. Cason Wallace Cason Wallace 6'4" | CG Richardson | 2022 State #6 Nation TX does the same thing for his team. He delivers passes with pinpoint accuracy and scores from all three levels while contributing on the boards as well. Additionally, his decision making is excellent. Both Doncic and Wallace can do it all on the offensive end.
Manny Obaseki Manny Obaseki 6'3" | SG John Paul II | 2021 State #47 Nation TX – 2021 6’4 Shooting Guard Allen HS
NBA Comp – Zach LaVine
Casual viewers know Zach LaVine as the freakishly athletic two-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion. While he still possesses his trademark leaping ability, Lavine has developed into one of the top combo guards in the Eastern Conference. He is most fun to watch when he is playing downhill, but the former UCLA Bruin is also an efficient three-point shooter and tremendous one-on-one player on offense. This makes him a great comp for Manny Obaseki Manny Obaseki 6'3" | SG John Paul II | 2021 State #47 Nation TX whose pure athleticism sometimes overshadows his overall skill. Obaseki is explosive in the open court, but he is a great all-around guard with an underrated jumper. The Texas A&M commit will continue to be a special prospect during his senior season.
Chase Ross Chase Ross 6'3" | SG Cushing Academy | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’5 Shooting Guard Plano West HS
NBA Comp – Paul George
Chase Ross Chase Ross 6'3" | SG Cushing Academy | 2021 State TX is another 2021 prospect who is an exceptional athlete. The soon-to-be senior does it all for his team at both ends, which reminds me of six-time NBA All-Star Paul George. George is a two-way player with great bounce. He can light up the scoreboard when he gets rolling offensively. Like George, Ross finishes above the rim on the break when he is given the chance and is virtually unstoppable once his shot begins to fall. That was the case earlier this year when I saw him drop 33 against Prosper. I think he can be equally productive at the next level when his responsibilities are narrowed, and he isn’t tasked with playing in the interior as much.
C.J. Noland C.J. Noland 6'4" | SG Waxahachie | 2021 State #129 Nation TX – 2021 6’3 Shooting Guard/Small Forward Waxahachie HS
NBA Comp – Eric Bledsoe
Bledsoe was given the nickname ‘Mini-LeBron” early in his career due to his physicality and aptitude for making highlight-reel plays. Milwaukee’s point guard is fearless on offense and defense. His bulldog mentality is similar to that of C.J. Noland C.J. Noland 6'4" | SG Waxahachie | 2021 State #129 Nation TX . Noland bullies defenders with his college-ready physique. He turns the corner to get inside as well as any guard I saw last season. I love how he is always in attack mode. Defensively, his strength allows him to guard a variety of players. It’s rare to see a guard play with the sheer power that Bledsoe and Noland possess.
