One of the “Names to Know” is Lake Forest 2023 shooting guard Asa Thomas. We caught him play late in the season and were very intrigued with what we saw so we went back to watch some more film from his freshman season. Here is what we saw!
Super impressed with this 6’5” shooting guard from the north suburbs. As a freshman he averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Long and thin build with plenty of time to add strength moving forward. As a perimeter shooter he has a lightning quick release. Very fluid transition from catch to shot. Moves extremely well without the ball to get open. Handles it with such ease and creativity. Smooth acceleration with the ball in his hands getting to the cup. Likes the runner game. Can take his man down to the post if they are smaller than him. Works well in pick/roll situations as a distributor. Passes ahead in transition throwing passes over the top of the defense to his teammate at the other end. Just overall an uber skilled game that is very translatable toward the next level. D1 programs need to be monitoring him early in the process.
Thomas is the best prospect to come out of Lake Forest since the Evan Boudreaux/Lorenzo Edwards era. We spoke with him to see what he felt are the strengths in his game at this stage.
“I personally think my game is perimeter oriented right now. I feel like I can hit a shot from anywhere on the court. With that being said I also need to work on attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. Our offense was a perfect fit for me and that credit goes to the coaching staff and the teammates around me.”
He plans on running the with the Illinois Wolves on the travel team circuit whenever it gets rolling up again. He says he doesn’t have any college interest yet, but expect that to change very soon! Thomas will make a very high debut in the first 2023 rankings. His season hudl tape is below!
