Continue ReadingCollege coaching staffs and scouts are always on the hunt for small school gems and diamonds in the rough. Someone off the beaten path. Someone who burns up the nets on a nightly basis to the delight of the local community that fills the stands. Class 1 Sacred Heart Sedalia may well have that guy in their superb sophomore Coen Brown, who is one of the best kept secrets in the state.
Brown, a 6’1″ combo guard in the ’22 class, is a smooth operator that plays with the poise and savvy of an upperclassman. He is a multi-level scorer with an alpha mentality that absolutely fills it up. He has already surpassed the 1000 point mark with two high school seasons to go and averaged 24 points per game in route to All-Conference and All-District honors.
Coen is a big-time three-point threat who can drill it off the catch and shoot and gets into his shot quickly after creating space and pulling up off the bounce. As a confident shooter with a quick trigger, Brown will make you pay if you leave him with any space at all. He is nearly automatic from 15 feet and in with the pull-up jumper as well.
While he is not an explosive, above the rim type of athlete at this stage in his development, Coen has plus anticipation and vision of the driving lanes that allows him to effectively read defenses and know when to drive to the hole and when to pull-up and knock down the mid-range. His body and ball control allows him to finish in tight spaces and through some contact after he knifes his way to the cup with a shifty in and out dribble and spin move.
Brown will continue to expand his game and improve over the next two seasons and will likely be one of the more prolific scorers to come through the area in quite some time. If we are lucky enough to have a grassroots season, Coen’s stock will certainly be on the rise as he is scheduled to run with Marcus Denmon Elite. Either way, he is certainly a prospect that deserves to be on everyone’s radar.
