Guards really need to play at a high level and bigger players are usually sought out because there is a limited amount of bigger players available. There are e few players that were able to assert themselves either way for their respective teams as freshman. There are also a lot of players that will have to wait their turn as they play on stacked teams. Here are a few players that had major production for the Class of 2023.
Quentin Meza Quentin Meza 6'0" | PG Cyprus | 2023 State UT (Cyprus)
At 17 points a game Quentin was a major surprise for Cyprus. He has always been able to score against players his age, but for him to put up the numbers he did was impressive regardless of what region he plays in. He is listed at 5’10 and despite him being undersized he finds ways to score. He is crafty, especially with his ability to hot the long ball. He hit 51 three-pointers and hit double-figures in over 75% of his games. His high IQ enables him to always be on the positive side of the plus/minus when he is on the floor. Excited to see what kind of production Quentin will have next season.
Lyman Simmons Lyman Simmons 6'10" | PF RSL Academy | 2023 State UT (Snow Canyon)
Lyman was productive as he put up 13 & 8 last season. Lyman is a double-double type of player that is consistent. His scoring around the basket is impressive. With continual improvement this off-season look for Lyman to be a threat at bit outside as he adds range to his game. Lyman is one of the stronger freshman in his class and will only get stronger and more skilled. Lyman is really good over his left shoulder. His game is still raw but he is skilled.
Max Toombs Max Toombs 6'3" | CG Corner Canyon | 2023 State UT (Corner Canyon)
Although Max only averaged 4 points and 1 rebound a game he picked it up as the season went on. He leapfrogged a lot of good guards in the program and he continues to do so and will see a minutes increase because he is that good. As a sophomore next season he will be even more productive for a team that should compete for a 6A State Championship. Max is a Jack of a trades because he can do so many things well.
