The absence of AAU has certainly affected our ability to evaluate, but here are the prospects that will be ranked 11-20 in the class of 2023 based on the 2019-20 high school season…
11. Landon Key Landon Key 6'4" | SF Wisconsin Lutheran | 2023 State WI – SF – Wisconsin Lutheran
Played a big role for Wisconsin Lutheran as a freshman. Has a body type that looks like he’s going to be much bigger and stronger down the road as well. A long, smooth athlete, Key averaged 6.6 points per game last season. Key does some exciting stuff in the open floor and finishes really well with either hand at the basket.
12. Demerius Shakur Demerius Shakur 6'2" | CG Martin Luther | 2023 State WI – Guard – Martin Luther
Saw this young man go right at the likes of Tyrese Hunter Tyrese Hunter 5'11" | PG Racine St. Catherine's | 2021 State #63 Nation WI and Alex Antetokounmpo Alex Antetokounmpo 6'7" | SF Dominican | 2020 State WI in some of his film clips, showing a high amount of confidence for a freshman. A dual-threat combo guard who can catch and shoot from 3-point range or attack the rack, Shakur averaged around six points per game for a 17-6 Martin Luther squad. Shakur is also an active defender that moves his feet really well and constantly disrupts the flow of the offense.
13. Simeon Murchison Simeon Murchison 6'9" | PF Milwaukee Bay View | 2023 State WI – PF – Milwaukee Bay View
Active post prospect with length and a motor. Does a lot of good things around the rim, but also stepped away from the basket and knocked down 21 triples last season. Already 6-foot-8, Murchison moves well for his size and is a force in transition. He’ll likely be a kid that shoots up this list in the coming years.
14. Jacob Dunham Jacob Dunham 6'4" | SG South Milwaukee | 2023 State WI – Guard – South Milwaukee
Averaged 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds for South Milwaukee last season. Wasn’t overly efficient or consistent as a freshman, but is a kid that’s been able to produce as a scorer and blue-collar, win-at-all costs type prospect. Dunham does the little things that coaches often preach and isn’t afraid to stick his face in the fan or scrap with anybody for a loose ball or rebound.
15. Kolten Monroe Kolten Monroe 6'7" | PF Milwaukee Bay View | 2023 IL – PF – Milwaukee Bay View
Good looking post prospect with size and skill. Monroe can bang and score on the block and also step away from the rim and shoot it from deep. Averaged more than five points per game for Bay View last season.
16. Cal Klesmit Cal Klesmit 6'2" | CG Neenah | 2023 State #235 Nation WI – Guard – Neenah
Split time between JV and Varsity last season, but have seen enough in fall league and other camps to know Klesmit would have been a viable contributor on most teams as a freshman. A two-way guard that plays with a chip on his shoulder, Klesmit appears to be a well rounded prospect with a high-IQ.
17. Danny Kniep Danny Kniep 6'5" | PF Burlington | 2023 WI – PF – Burlington
Stretch forward who’s a consistent threat in the pick n’ pop game, Kniep averaged 6.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as a freshman for Burlington. The 6-foot-5 forward is light on his feet, gets off the floor quickly, and does a good job of protecting the rim on the defensive end.
18. Mason Prey Mason Prey 6'4" | CG Newman Catholic | 2023 State WI – Guard – Newman Catholic
Led Newman Catholic in scoring last season at 13.4 points per game. The 6-foot-2 freshman also dished out more than three assists per contest. Prey looks to be a versatile, well-rounded scorer who can do damage in a variety of ways. Prey looks comfortable off the dribble, off the catch-and-shoot, moves exceptionally well without the basketball, and will even take people down into the post and make them defend the block.
19. Bennett McCormick – SG – Catholic Memorial
A 6-foot-2 slashing guard that really started to come on towards the end of the season, McCormick finished with consecutive double-figure performances in the playoffs for the Crusaders. Like the way McCormick can push the tempo and knife through defenses. McCormick has a long, lanky frame and looks like he’ll grow quite a bit and be a difficult matchup problem on the wing. He also shows flashes of lockdown defensive ability as well.
20. Ethan Thomas Ethan Thomas 6'7" | PF Whitnall | 2023 State WI – PF – Greenfield
Another big man that could/should surge up this list in the coming years, Thomas averaged around four points per game for Greenfield last season. Already 6-foot-8 with a very intriguing frame, Thomas is an imposing force on the interior. He’s not overly skilled yet, but Thomas is an active post prospect who can control the glass, protect the rim, and also has the mobility to defend out on the perimeter if caught on a switch.
