Jalen Cox — Loyola
The first under-the-radar 2022 guard to watch is Jalen Cox. The 6’0″ offered much on the offensive end for the Cubs, from ball-handling to passing. But shooting for him this past season was a component of his game which he improved on. He likes to exploit space by scouring over to the weak side, which he can then pull up for uncontested shots. He works well off screens and either takes on the shot himself or turn into an unselfish distributor inside; he keeps defenses on their heels by being unpredictable on the ball.
He did not have a multitude of double-digit performances like some of his teammates did over the campaign but look for this to change next season.
Chris Diaz — Orangewood Academy
The first forward on this list is Chris Diaz. In his time with the team this past season, Diaz displayed prominent work over on the defensive end, but he did showcase what he can provide when on the ball. He has the potential to be a reliable double-digit scorer due to his physical presence in the paint and capability as a 3-point shooter. He can lurk around the 3-point line and take on shots but must work on establishing a swifter release.
There is much to work on for him when it comes to polishing his offensive skill set, but he has the tools to become a good weapon to go to on this side of the ball.
Malik Moore — Heritage Christian
Malik Moore has promising potential to blossom into an efficient sharpshooter. Moore made good work of his minutes as a role-playing scorer who provided quick scoring. The 6’3″ guard has a very good arch on his shot and lets it fly in catch-and-shoot opportunities. He steps well into the shot and fosters a high set release point, which goes right above his head. Taking this into account, look for the guard to be a dark horse contender to soon become a 40% shooter from 3-point land — a difficult but capable task for Moore.
He is also a careful dribbler and does well to keep his dribble alive, which helps in possessions where he is looking for any ways to distance himself away from his nearest defender.
Samson Hall — Moorpark
Samson Hall is coming off of a promising 7.1 points per game campaign that was capped off with an All-Coastal Canyon League Second Team selection. The 6’2” talent is a high energy guard who is a balanced shooter. Teammates can find him roaming the 3-point line or inside in the low post. Hall is a streaky shooter who can hit from drives to the paint or corner 3-point shots. As a shooter, he has a unique shooting form as he does not get much lift on his release. Still, he is a player more than capable of getting into a groove and knocking down shots in consecutive possessions.
Hall has much to work on with his shooting release, but he has a promising form to build off of.
