Here is the Austin Rankings Series: 2021 Guards #1-5:
#1 – Coleton Benson Coleton Benson 6'1" | SG Austin Bowie | 2021 State TX | 6-1 SG | Austin Bowie
Benson earned our top spot for Austin’s 2021 guards after his impressive junior season where he averaged 22 points per contest for Bowie. Benson possesses an elite ability to score and can put up points in a hurry. He has a great shooting touch and can light it up from anywhere beyond-the-arc. With the ball in his hands, he can create separation for clean shots from the mid-range to the three-point territory. He has fantastic movement and pace without the ball and knows how to use screens to his advantage. Benson is a high effort player on both offense and defense and is a vocal leader on the court for the Bulldogs. Earned TABC 6A Region 4 All-Region Team. Earned All-District 25-6A First Team.
#2 – Jaden Williams | 5-11 PG | Pflugerville Hendrickson
A standout star point guard for Hendrickson, Williams was the leader on the court for the Hawks 24-12 record this past season. During his junior year he averaged 16.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game, leading the Hawks in both scoring and assists. He has elite athletic ability and suddenness to his cuts where he can start-and-stop at any given moment. Possesses fantastic short-area burst with explosive leaping ability. A lefty who is a smooth finisher at the rim, but can also hurt defenses with his pull-up mid-range game and deep-range shooting. He plays fast and aggressive on defense and shows his high basketball IQ in his hudl tapes. A dual-sport star (football). Earned All-District 13-6A First Team.
#3 – Eain Mowat Eain Mowat 6'0" | PG Austin Westlake | 2021 State TX | 6-0 PG | Austin Westlake
As a floor general for the Chaparrals 33-2 record this past year, Mowat ran the offense to perfection as he constantly created scoring opportunities for his teammates. With great court vision and swift, accurate passing, Mowat racked up the assists during his junior season. He does a great job of executing the pick-and-roll offense, and his skilled ball-handling allows him to create separation from the defender where he then displays a good mid-range jumper and floater. Mowat is also a terrific catch-and-shoot three-point shooter and has the capability of catching fire from beyond-the-arc. Earned All-District 25-6A First Team.
#4 – Jaylen Thompson | 6-3 PG | Leander Glenn
As a tall point guard with great length, Thompson uses his size and explosiveness to get past defenders and to the basket. He has great bounce, with multiple high-flying dunks shown on his hudl tapes. Can score in a variety of ways at a high level, including step-back threes, pull-up shots, and finishing above the rim. Thompson deploys smooth ball-handling skills with both hands and has a nice spin move to create separation. He plays with great anticipation on defense and excels when in transition opportunities. Earned All-District 17-5A First Team & Offensive MVP.
#5 – Tristin Thomas | 5-11 SG | Northeast Early College
Thomas balled out for the Raiders this past season and was an explosive offensive weapon who could light up the scoreboard on any given night. An elite three-point shooter, Thomas isn’t afraid to shoot the rock and has shown he has NBA level range from beyond-the-arc. Excels at catch-and-shoot opportunities with a quick release, but can also hit moving jumpers and pull-up shots. He has elite short-area quickness and displays great burst when going towards the basket. On defense, he plays with a feisty edge, causing havoc and multiple turnovers with his ability to steal the ball. Earned TABC 5A Region 4 All-Region Team. Earned All-District 25-5A First Team.
