In previous articles, I broke down which prospects in the 2022 and 2021 classes I felt would have raised their stock this Spring. The 2023 class in Washington has a solid amount of talent and potential and this Spring was going to provide media and college coaches a glimpse of what’s to come in this state. Without further ado, these are some of the freshman that were poised for a breakout Spring season.
“Would’ve Been” Stock Risers:
Player: Kelson Gebbers Kelson Gebbers 6'6" | SF Brewster | 2023 State WA
HS: Brewster
Club: FOH Seattle
2023 6’6 SF Kelson Gebbers Kelson Gebbers 6'6" | SF Brewster | 2023 State WA is one of the state’s better prospects at this stage with his size and versatility at 6’6. Gebbers was good for over 13 points, 6 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1 block per game, helping Brewster to a 25-3 record and 2b State Championship. Any freshman of that size that can come in and make an instant impact on a state title team is impressive and I believe this confidence would have carried over to the Spring with Friends of Hoop.
Player: Miles Heide Miles Heide 6'7" | C Mount Si | 2023 State #274 Nation WA
HS: Mt. Si
Club: FOH Seattle
2023 6’7 PF Miles Heide Miles Heide 6'7" | C Mount Si | 2023 State #274 Nation WA of Mt. Si High School is a prospect many college coaches may not know about, but they most definitely will in due time. It is almost scary to think about the fact that Heide quite possibly has the highest ceiling out of any player from Mt. Si’s 4a state title team and he didn’t even log real playing time in the state tournament. Playing behind three Division 1 seniors and a couple of more experienced players will pay off for him in the long run. The long and athletic lefty is still growing and piecing together his skill set, but he is a Division 1 prospect that would have been able to get out on the floor and show his tools.
Player: Sherrell McCullum Jr. Sherrell McCullum Jr. 6'6" | PF Garfield | 2023 State WA
HS: Garfield
Club: Seattle Rotary
2023 6’5 PF Sherrell McCullum spent his freshman season at O’Dea tearing it up on the JV team, but has reportedly transferred to Garfield. He has outstanding strength and deceptive explosiveness and footwork around the paint that make him difficult for posts to guard. He can hit the 15 footer and appears to still be growing some as well. If he can get into the 6’7 range, he is another player that colleges will be watching closely.
Player: Tyce Paulsen Tyce Paulsen 6'5" | SG Curtis | 2023 State WA
HS: Curtis
Club: WA Supreme
2023 6’4 SG Tyce Paulsen Tyce Paulsen 6'5" | SG Curtis | 2023 State WA was slotted to play up with Washington Supreme’s 16u squad and would have gained valuable experience against older players on the club circuit. He has already shown the ability to score it and play with confidence against much older players as a real impact freshman for Curtis. Paulsen has a smooth handle and the ability to shoot from all over the court. As he continues to get stronger, he will be a problem for years to come and on the radar of colleges.
Player: Alex Yu Alex Yu 6'3" | CG Bellevue | 2023 State WA
HS: Bellevue
Club: FOH Seattle
2023 6’2 CG Alex Yu Alex Yu 6'3" | CG Bellevue | 2023 State WA had a solid season for Bellevue High School in his freshman season. Yu has good explosiveness in the open court, a deceptive handle and a really high basketball IQ. He is a very strong rebounder and competes for every loose ball possible. A playmaker that could have really shown off his ability with Friends of Hoop’s strong 2023 group this Spring.
