Athletes across the state take a lot of pride in ensuring that they develop any way they can to garner the attention of college coaches, especially with how competitive the competition level continues to grow. It will be exciting to follow players as they continue to prove themselves when the lights come on.
Yaqub Mir Yaqub Mir 6'3" | SG Granite Bay | 2023 State CA-N (Granite Bay)
A high IQ guard who is very poised with the ball in his hands. Mir will be a well-polished player when his high school career is finished. A player who stepped up big time for the Grizzlies. Mir was the only freshman to receive all Sierra Foothill League honors. The Grizzlies standout was huge offensively and was second on the team in scoring. A player who has a lot of confidence in his game and his growing in his leadership abilities. Mir can flat out shoot the ball but is crafty with his finishes around the rim as well.
Cody Smith Cody Smith 6'7" | PF Liberty Ranch | 2023 State CA-N (Liberty Ranch)
The 6-foot-7 big man was astronomical for the Hawks. A big presence in the paint, Smith plays a key role in scoring, rebounding, and playing defense for a solid Hawks group. The big man will be a double-double threat during his high school career, and he showed a sneak peek during his freshman campaign scoring 9 points, grabbing nearly 7 rebounds, and blocks 2.2 shots per contest. Smith has quality footwork around the rim with a soft touch and a strong body.
Varick Lewis (Monterey Trail)
One of the best freshmen in the state. Lewis is playing beyond his years. A strong and physical guard who does not back down from anyone. Lewis is capable of scoring the rock at all three levels already. An explosive guard who loves to attack the rim and can finish through touch contact. Lewis has a quick first step and tight handle making him hard to guard. The all-metro selection ended his freshman season with impactful numbers, 22 points, nearly 3 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. A high motor player on both ends of the court.
Colton Dukes Colton Dukes 6'1" | SG Atwater | 2023 State CA-N (Atwater)
The 6-foot guard is a winner and also gets it done in the classroom. A player with a great feel for the game and can see a play before it happens. Dukes is a quality defender and can really pick the pocket of the opposing teams. The guard has great qualities offensively as well. A player who can put the ball on the floor and create an opportunity but a player who moves extremely well without the ball, making him even more difficult to guard. A scrappy player who just loves to compete and does anything to help his team succeed.
Braeden Beaman (Sacramento Adventist)
Expect Beaman to be an even bigger role player for the Capitals next season. A player who plays at a high level all game long. A junkyard type player who scored nearly 8 points, dishing nearly 2 assists, grabbing 4 rebounds to go with nearly 2 steals. Beaman can really shoot the ball well and he showed a lot of potential in other aspects of his game as well. The 6-foot guard is a quality floor general with a tight handle and good court vision. Beaman is a tough guard who can really crash the board and is a well-rounded defender.
