When you watch as many games as we do, no matter how organized we are there are always going to be kids that we forget. While we did 100 prospects in the latest rankings (we plan to go up to 125 or 150 in the next ones), there were quite a few I realized I forgot as soon as they were done. Here’s a look at some of them.
Cade McCulloch | 6’7” PF | West Point
West Point is a program on the rise with a young group of talented players ready to make a name for themselves, and McCulloch was one of the guys this year despite battling through injuries this season. The 6’7” forward will have a chance to be one of the best players in Class 1 next year, as his mix of size, athleticism and skill makes him a walking mismatch and an intriguing prospect. He showed he can rebound and protect the paint, he can handle it in transition and he’s a guy at his size that can make shots from deep and attack the paint and finish above the rim as well.
Micah Crider | 6’2” F | Liberty (Bedford)
Crider is a guy who impressed me with his athleticism, motor and production rate when I watched him at Chance Harman this year. He’s still a little raw but he showed a good base skill set that included the ability to make shots out on the perimeter when set and open, he can rebound in and out of his area and he guarded multiple positions as well. He’s got a chance to round his game out and has great physical and athletic tools as well.
Aiden Darrell | 6’3” WG | Green Run
Darrell is often overlooked because Green Run is one of the deepest teams in the 757 and that’s why he was easy to forget in these rankings. A wing that has good size and a good understanding of the game, Darrell is a guy who can put himself in situations to succeed and take advantage of his opportunities to make an impact on the game. He has good ball skills as he can handle against pressure, make the right play and make shots from all over.
Tyrique Taylor | 6’4” PF/C | Christiansburg
Taylor is part of a young Christiansburg team I believe will be a surprise contender in the NRV next year and his physical presence is one of the main reasons. He’s a very strong kid who isn’t afraid to get physical in the post, he rebounds and defends extremely well and he doesn’t need the ball in his hands to make an impact. With continued improvement he could become a dominant two way player with his mix of size and athleticism.
George Pettaway | 6’0” PG | Nansemond-Suffolk
Pettaway could have easily been in my rankings but he’s a high major football prospect that is getting recruited by P5 schools across the country already. While that shows his natural athleticism, Pettaway is also one of the best true point guards and floor generals in the 757 area as well. He’s a guy who sets the tone on both ends of the floor, he runs the offense extremely well and makes great decisions and he’s a dual threat guy that can score it and makes everyone on his team better as well.
Miles Phillips | 5’9” PG | Thomas Dale
Phillips was a breakout guy for a Dale team that was perhaps the breakout team in the state this past season. A naturally gifted lead guard that can both score it and distribute, Phillips is a guy who mixes quickness and change of pace with the ability to make tough shots and run the show as well. He’s a three level scoring guard that knows how to negate his size and thrives in transition where he can use his speed and court vision.
Adam Hatter | 5’10” PG | Eastern Mennonite
Hatter’s resume is as good as anyone on this list as the EMHS point guard has helped them to back to back VISAA D3 State Title appearances over the last two years. He comes from a basketball family and he has a great feel and understanding of the game to go along with long range shooting ability and some toughness you can’t teach. He has great range off the catch and off the bounce, he never backs down from a challenge and he runs the show extremely well too.
