But in the latest 2021 rankings, it’s safe to say that some players could be higher.
Let’s jump into six players who could make a jump either during the summer or during the 2020-21 season.
Ayman McGowan, MUS: McGowan checked in at No. 180. McGowan shoots the ball very well and always seems to take the right shot. He’s a solid player that’s unselfish and fits well with a team like the Owls that runs a lot of sets. I expect McGowan to have a solid senior season and move up some in the 2021 rankings.
Jaylan Wetzel, Siegel: Wetzel is an underrated defender. His efforts on the defensive end doesn’t get talked about a lot. Last season, the 6-1 combo guard averaged 1.5 steals per game. Wetzel can score the basketball as well, averaging right under 16 points per game (15.8) in 2019. He checked in at No. 59 in the latest 2021 rankings. I expect Wetzel to have a solid senior season, which would make a case for him to move into the top 50.
Bwerani Johnson Jr., Freedom Prep: Johnson checked in at No. 63 in the rankings and could crack the top 50 if he has a solid summer (if that happens) or solid regular season. He averaged 18.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 4.2 steals during the 2019-20 season. Johnson was one of the best combo guards in Class A this past season. Some Division 1 programs are looking at him. It’s not hard to see why.
Davon Barnes, White Station: The 6-5 small forward has upper body strength and can easily move his defender out of the way when he’s heading into the paint. Barnes can shoot the ball at a high clip and plays hard on both ends of the floor. Vanderbilt and other Division 1 programs are looking at Barnes. Eventually, the offers will come rolling in. By the end of his senior season, Barnes, who’s at No. 55, should end up in the top 50.
Tyler Fitzpatrick, Fayette Ware: I can’t say this about a lot of kids, but Fitzpatrick has a lot of potential, but now is the time to show that he’s big time. I have been saying this for a couple of months now. I’m starting to sound like a broken record. Fitzpatrick has all of the tools to be a Division 1 basketball player. He has to want it more than everyone else. Fitzpatrick is currently at No. 56. If he puts everything together, Fitzpatrick could end up in the top 40.
Jensen Linton, Eagleville: Linton is looking to bounce back from a quad injury that forced him to miss ¼ of the regular season. He’s a 6-5 wing that’s mobile and offensively gifted. Linton has been in the gym, working with current college players to prepare for his senior season. He’s currently at No. 86. This has the makings of an underdog ending. If Linton can stay healthy, his senior season could be special. Also, Linton could see Division 1 scholarships rolling in.
