It’s looking dreary every day that a summer league isn’t going to happen. And that really hurt a lot of kid’s recruitment in the 2021 class.
But, let’s look at the bright side of things. At least there’s hope for high school basketball.
With that being said, here are six players who could improve their stock in the 2020 season.
Brandon Maclin, Jackson Southside: The 6-foot-4 shooting guard has just about everything a coach wants in a guard. He’s tough, plays solid defense, crashes the boards, goes after loose balls and drives into the lane with force. The only thing missing from Maclin’s game is a consistent jump shot. He needs that to play at the next level. Maclin currently sits at No. 22 in the latest 2021 rankings. He has the makeup of a top 20 prospect.
Grant Hurst, Cleveland: Hurst is one of few combo guards in this class that can affect the game without scoring. He’s special because of his passing ability. Hurst sees the floor well. I first saw him last summer playing for Work Hard Be Humble. I was impressed by how well he runs the floor and finishing touch at the rim. Hurst is definitely a potential top 20 prospect in this class. A solid senior campaign could put him there.
Jonathan Milloway, Oak Ridge: Milloway is tough to guard because of the different ways he can score the basketball. He can post up, knock down 17-foot jumpers and step out to the 3-point line. Milloway currently sits at No. 40. Maybe that’s too low for him. Maybe he should have been somewhere in the top 30. A strong senior season should be more-than-enough to put Milloway in the top 25.
JaQuan Lax, Bolivar Central: Lax is coming off a solid junior season averaging 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. He’s a scoring point guard that’s very shifty and crafty. Lax made noise in 2019, leading the Tigers to a district tournament runner-up finish in Class AA. He’s in the top half of the rankings at No. 48. Maybe he should be in the top 40 already. Lax is a hungry, confident player. Seeing players get more recognition drives him.
Reese McMullen, Christian Brothers: McMullen is one of the best shooters in the class. He has a quick release. McMullen can create space between himself and his defender to get a shot off. His ball handles made huge strides from last season. McMullen sits at No. 24 in the rankings. Another solid season of averaging 15.2 points, four rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals will be hard not to move him up.
Zion Swader, Siegel: Swader can get into the lane with ease. That’s his bread and his passing ability is his butter. The 6-0 point guard currently sits at No. 30 in the rankings. Swader has the potential to be a top 25 prospect in the class. He’s a confident floor general, which is what makes a solid player.
