Continue ReadingThe 2019-20 high school basketball regular season and playoffs have long been over, but there are still are quite a few unsigned seniors left who have not yet committed to a college. With all travel ball events being put on indefinite hold, unsigned seniors didn’t get one final opportunity to showcase themselves to college coaches.
In addition to that, the NCAA transfer portal exploded, and college coaches seemingly opted to go with more proven college talent than taking a chance on a senior in the absence of the spring live period.
Here are some seniors I’ve watched this season who are still unsigned and could probably help a college team at some level, whether that be D1-DIII or even NAIA and JuCo.
Diego Dominguez – Northfield
Dominguez is a true point guard that puts the team first and values the basketball. He is a player that plays within the system, adds toughness and tenacity to the team, especially on the defensive end of the floor and also controls the tempo and pace. Northfield was a team that overachieved this year, and it was because of good coaching and also buying into the system. Dominguez was the proven leader of the system and showed that as he finished with 8.7 points, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals a game. Dominguez shot 34% from beyond the arc, and in every big game hit the crucial shots that the team needed to put his team over the top. He is a hard worker that gave the Nighthawks their identity this season. Dominguez is starting to get a bit of attention from JuCo’s and DIII’s, and I feel will make a decision soon.

Kaleb Chaney Kaleb Chaney 5'11" | CG Overland | 2020 State CO – Overland
Chaney is a hard-working guard that is going to give you his all at all times, and his speed is what separates him from the pack. He blows by defenders and finds the open man, but also plays off of the ball and knocks down the corner 3-ball as well as anyone else in the class. Chaney is a creative finisher at the rim that has a polished floater game, which creates easy points, stays in front of players on the defensive end, and is a glue guy that you can stick in any situation. He values the ball and does not turn the ball over a ton, which keeps him on the floor. If a school is looking for a high IQ guard that has contagious energy, then look no further as he put the team first and sacrificed himself to make the Trailblazers a better team.
Dominic Nellis Dominic Nellis 5'10" | CG Holy Family | 2020 State CO – Holy Family
Nellis is a small and productive guard that makes things happen. He is a high IQ guard that makes others around him better. He was the team’s best passer and set his teammates up for easy baskets. He also pushed the pace offensively and got the team in his sets. While Nellis is not a big-time scorer, he is a player that the team relied on for four years of varsity and made an impact with his unselfish ways. Nellis averaged 5.7 assists a game for his career as he sees two plays ahead. If I am a small school looking for a hard worker and floor leader, this is a player that I would be after.
Caden Gigstad Caden Gigstad 6'1" | CG Ralston Valley | 2020 State CO – Ralston Valley
Gigstad is as tough as nails. He is a hard-working guard that gets after it on both ends of the floor and has a great blend of strength, size, and court awareness, which had him as one of the top guards in the conference and one of the best-unsigned seniors remaining. He is a two-way threat that doesn’t allow guards to go by him, and that opened up the rest of his game. Offensively, Gigstad had his best season yet as this four-year varsity player averaged 15.1 points as he shot 36% from beyond the arc and also knows his way around the basket as well. He also rebounded exceptionally well, grabbing just under four boards a game and dishing out near three assists a game as well. Gigstad did it all for the Mustangs, and it led to rims. He is a player I feel comfortable in saying will make the team better.
Patrick Steed Patrick Steed 6'0" | CG Denver East | 2020 State CO – Denver East
The word is that Steed is going to hang them up and not play anymore, and that would be a mistake. Steed is one of the better facilitators in the state and also was a true competitor that made Denver East flow last season. Steed defended opposing teams top guards, pushed and controlled the pace and tempo, and also moved the ball around. When the Angels looked on him to step up, he made some big plays as he was never afraid of the moment. He got to the rim and finished and is very quick and strong with the ball. He played on and off of the ball and was also one of the team’s rebounders. Steed was a stat sheet stuffer as he put up 12.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and also over two steals a game. He had a great season and has plenty of good basketball ahead of him. If not, what a great way to end it all.
