St. Augustine has reigned supreme for the last several seasons in 9-5A and we’ll take a look at each team to see who may have a chance to challenge them in 2020-21. One team will be released each day according to last year’s standings starting with Rummel and ending with the Purple Knights, which will also include a prediction for next year’s standings.
Here’s our outlook on Shaw:
2019-20 Catholic League Standings
1. St. Augustine | 31-2 (12-0)
2. Brother Martin | 29-6 (9-3)
5. Shaw | 18-14 (4-8)
SHAW
Shaw was a young team that made a fairly significant jump last season, particularly out of league play. They were 4-8 in 9-5A with two victories over Rummel, two over John Curtis and had two losses of three and five points to Jesuit. Overall, the Eagles finished with an 18-14 record including a, 54-53, loss to Jesuit in the opening round of the playoffs and the vast majority of their top players will return.
The core of the group will be 2021 G Isaiah Crawford Isaiah Crawford 6'3" | CG Archbishop Shaw | 2021 State LA (6’3”), 2023 PG Kameron Johnson (5’7”), 2022 G Isaiah Barnes Isaiah Barnes 5'9" | PG Archbishop Shaw | 2022 State LA (5’9”) and 2021 G Kenneth Taylor (5’11”). All four can knock down shots from deep with Crawford bringing the athleticism while Johnson brings the intangibles along with scoring ability.
Johnson certainly has a chance to be one of the top players in his class in the state, especially if he gets the luck of the draw growing a few inches. Shaw also has a big in the fold in 2022 Rodney Phillips Rodney Phillips 6'2" | SG Archbishop Shaw | 2022 State LA (6’2”, 235) who can also step outside and hit the three. Wesley Laurendine is a very good coach as well who ensures the Eagles will gel as a group playing off of each other’s strengths.
