St. Augustine has reigned supreme for the last several seasons in 9-5A and we’ll take a look at each team to see who may have a chance to challenge them in 2020-21. One team will be released each day according to last year’s standings starting with Rummel and ending with the Purple Knights, which will also include a prediction for next year’s standings.
Here’s our outlook on Rummel:
2019-20 Catholic League Standings
1. St. Augustine | 31-2 (12-0)
2. Brother Martin | 29-6 (9-3)
7. Rummel | 14-17 (2-10)
RUMMEL
It was a tough season for Rummel last year going 9-25 with a first-round exit to St. Paul’s, 75-58. Those struggles included league play where they finished 2-10 with their two wins coming against John Curtis (63-57) and Jesuit (38-29).
The Raiders will have to replace their top two offensive threats in guards Kade Rivera and Colby Barrios, who both did their best work behind the arc to give Rummel some shooting. 2021s Garrett Schmit and Bradley Smith will step into those roles next season as the team’s best long range threats, but the ceiling for this group may be determined by 2022 PG Rohan Johnson.
Johnson was just beginning to come into his own last season before a knee injury cut his year short. He’s best getting into the lane and creating for teammates, but can also finish at the rim when necessary. Johnson could end up missing a solid portion of the next season as he rehabs his knee, which would be a pretty big blow for Rummel as coach Scott Thompson looks to get the program back on track heading into his third season at the helm.
Thompson appears to tailor his system towards the players he has and puts an emphasis on consistent ball movement and hunting for the right shot. The Raiders’ biggest impediment, however, in 2020-21 will simply be the talent level they have to work with. There’s no marquee player on the roster as of now, and unless someone in the fold makes some significant strides in the offseason or some new talent is infused into the program, it could be another long year for the Raiders.
