With the end of the season and no April live periods, the commitment season got started early with at least 15 kids committing since the end of the season. Here’s a look at part one of the list with 8 kids who have announced their choice for their spot next season.
Chaunce Jenkins Chaunce Jenkins 6'3" | SG Menchville | 2020 State VA | 6’4” WF | Menchville (#18 Overall)
Commitment: Wichita State
Everyone was talking about Wichita State losing seven kids to the transfer portal but Greg Marshall flexed a little bit by getting a host of kids like Jenkins who were late bloomers or overlooked guys who are very talented. Jenkins has the right frame and is a high level athlete who should fit that just fine from day one, and the rate he improved over the past few years he’s going to be a guy that you need to watch out for in the next few years in the AAC.
Amir Nesbitt Amir Nesbitt 6'0" | PG Miller School | 2020 State #434 Nation VA | 6’0” PG | Miller School (#22 Overall)
Commitment: Hampton
Nesbitt heads home to the 757 where he’ll join a Hampton team that has produced some very good guards over the past few years. He’s a guy who comes with a great resume as a guy who can play both backcourt positions, he can score with the ball in his hands and make plays for others and he’s a top notch on ball defender who moves his feet well and has a good feel on both ends of the floor.
Jamel Melvin Jamel Melvin 6'9" | PF Potomac School | 2020 State VA | 6’8” PF | Potomac School (#25 Overall)
Commitment: Northern Colorado
It’s not every day that someone from the DMV area commits to a school in Colorado but hats off the NC staff for finding a diamond in the rough in Melvin. He’s a long and athletic four man with good versatility that can stretch the floor, he thrives in transition where he can run with the guards and use his athleticism to finish above the rim and he’s a good defender that can guard multiple positions as well.
Tyler Henderson Tyler Henderson 5'8" | PG LC Bird | 2020 State VA | 5’8” PG | LC Bird (#28 Overall)
Commitment: Anderson (D2 SC)
Henderson will join former LC Bird stars Rahim Jenkins and Mack Burgett in the SAC when he heads to Anderson University next year. Anderson has done a great job recruiting the commonwealth over the past few years and get a steal in Henderson who was largely overlooked because of his size, but his defensive intensity and ability to pick things up on the fly will make his transition pretty easy.
Malachi Poindexter Malachi Poindexter 6'2" | CG STAB | 2020 State VA | 6’2” G | STAB (#35 Overall)
Commitment: UVA (PWO)
Poindexter is taking the route of former STAB star Jayden Nixon, as well as former Albemarle star Austin Katstra as another local guy heading to UVA as a preferred walk on. Poindexter battled through injuries throughout his high school career but was one of the most offensively gifted point guards in the state with his ability to create and make shots from all over as well as make plays for others.
Jahme Ested Jahme Ested 6'2" | PG Henrico | 2020 State VA | 6’1” PG | Henrico (#49 Overall)
Commitment: Millersville (D2 PA)
Millersville gets their third commit from VA in the 2020 class and get an absolute go-getter at the point guard spot in Ested. The First Team All State selection steadily improved every year with Henrico over the past four seasons, and he has a toughness and all out attacking style that makes him a nightmare to match up with.
Josh Campbell Josh Campbell 6'2" | SG Carmel School | 2020 State VA | 6’3” WG | Carmel School (#50 Overall)
Commitment: Richard Bland College
Campbell was a First Team All VISAA selection for Carmel School and has one of the best resumes in all of high school basketball in the state. He’s a guy who plays with a great motor on both ends, he can shoot it and scores it in bunches, he rebounds well and he steps his play up whenever he’s matched up with high level players.
James Wallace III James Wallace III 6'3" | SF Henrico | 2020 State VA | 6’4” F | Henrico (#53 Overall)
Commitment: Christopher Newport
CNU has reloaded in a big way in the 2020 class with six commitments from the state of VA, five of which are ranked in the Prep Hoops VA Top 150 with Wallace being the latest one. Wallace brings a mix of athleticism and versatility to the Captains as a guy who can play inside-out, will thrive in transition and should continue to improve with time.
