Continue ReadingOur Class of 2022 rankings have been updated and there were definitely some notes and game film to go over in order to make our best placements for now. We saw quite a few players make their debuts in the rankings in this iteration and here’s a closer look at the top ten newcomers.
#5 – Devon Malcolm Devon Malcolm 6'4" | SF South Medford | 2022 State OR , Butte Falls, 6-3, F/G
Easily the making the biggest entry into the Class of 2022 rankings is Malcolm, who could arguably be the top combination of athleticism and power in the entire state regardless of grade. He’s hidden down in 2A at Butte Falls but we were grateful we had the opportunity to see him in person when the Loggers made the trip north to play a playoff game against Columbia Christian. Malcolm is strong, plays bigger than his size, and his perimeter skills continue to develop. His ceiling is extremely high and is why Pac-12 schools are already tracking him. At the end of the day he very well could have a chance at the top spot in the Class of 2022 rankings but we feel comfortable with him at #5 for now.
#10 – Kyle Hamnes Kyle Hamnes 5'10" | CG Century | 2022 OR , Century, 5-10, PG/SG
We caught Hamnes a couple of times with Century this past season and were really impresed with his high motor and intensity that he plays with on both ends. The 5-foot-10 combo guard relentlessly attacks the basket, can knock down open threes, and really gets after it on the defensive side as well. Hamnes averaged 9.0 points and 2.1 assists in a starting role on the wing but will get the opportunity to play more point guard next year.
#11 – Jacob Newell Jacob Newell 6'3" | SF Thurston | 2022 State OR , Thurston, 6-3, F
We saw Newell once early in the year at the Capitol City Classic and admittedly he didn’t really catch our eye as Thurston was getting blown out by Rancho Christian. But writer Jackson Naugle caught him later on this season in Midwestern League play and was impressed with his ability to play big inside. The numbers don’t lie either at 11.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and his transition to more of a perimeter game will be one to watch.
#22 – Julian Mora Julian Mora 6'0" | PG Summit | 2022 State OR , Summit, 5-10 PG
Mora is a shifty point guard who is coming into his own both physically and on the court as a floor leader. He is a competitive guy and doesn’t back down from bigger players. He is capable of both driving to the hole and hitting from the outside and he’ll be more of a leading guy on next year’s team with the graduation of several Summit seniors.
#25 – Landon Thom Landon Thom 6'2" | CG Westside Christian | 2022 State OR , Westside Christian, 6-2, G
We actually missed seeing Thorn live in action as he had already suffered a season-ending ankle injury by the time we got to see Western Christian. But watching him on film, it’s clear he’s a do-it-all type of player at the 3A level for his team. Thom handles the ball well under pressure, finds ways to get to the hoop, and finishes through contact. He’s one we will have our eyes on.
#27 – Baydon Kullowatz Baydon Kullowatz 6'5" | PF Sherwood | 2022 State OR , Sherwood, 6-5, F
Kullowatz ended up starting for the Bowmen and while he served as a complimentary player this season, there’s no question his role will be increased. He’s a rock-solid 6-foot-5 with a strong body that he effectively uses down low both scoring on the block and on the boards. Kullowatz also showed flashes of a perimeter shot at times.
#29 – Andre Lawrence Andre Lawrence 6'2" | CG Grant | 2022 State OR , Grant, 6-2, G
Grant has been deep in the backcourt the past few seasons and as expected his first year on varsity, Lawrence only got spot minutes. But from what we able to see, the soon-to-be junior is a jack-of-all trades type of guy. Lawrence has a pretty decent mid-range shot, handles the ball fairly well, and is active on the defensive end. He should be called on to serve a bigger role in 2020-21.
#30 – Junior Sleezer Junior Sleezer 6'2" | CG South Medford | 2022 State OR , South Medford, 6-2, G
Sleezer immediately caught our eye in a pre-league game in December against Lakeridge. He’s a point guard with some size and against the Pacers he had his way getting to the hoop and either converting in the lane or kicking it out to open teammates. Improvements with his perimeter shot and with decision should come with additional experience.
#31 – Bryce Dyer Bryce Dyer 6'5" | PF North Medford | 2022 State OR , North Medford, 6-3, F
At this point Dyer is a bit of an undersized post at a listed 6-foot-3 but he’s an effective one. This is the case especially on the glass as he ended up among the state’s leaders in rebounding (9.4 rpg). An underrated interior passer, Dyer’s expansion of his skills will be one to watch develop.
#33 – Henri Perrin Henri Perrin 6'3" | SG Wells | 2022 State OR , Lincoln, 6-3, G/F
Lincoln players have traditionally been gritty and hard-nosed and Perrin certainly fit that bill in all the games we saw him this past season. He plays bigger than his height, isn’t afraid to get physical in the paint, and in general plays hard. Perrin may not have hit a high percentage on the year but he has a fairly nice looking form on his jumper.
