This has certainly been the case in Oregon but since the start of April, members of the Class of 2020 and several others have been able to still make educated decisions about their college futures and have made their commitments known.
We’ve already reported on the decisions of Sam Noland Sam Noland 6'1" | CG Tualatin | 2020 State OR (2020 Tualatin) to Pacific Lutheran and Trey Galbraith Trey Galbraith 5'9" | PG South Salem | 2020 State OR (2020 South Salem) to Lane CC – here’s a breakdown of some of the other commitments made this past week.
DeRay Seamster DeRay Seamster 6'1" | CG Central Catholic | 2020 State OR (2020 Central Catholic) made a verbal commitment to sign with Chaminade over the weekend. The 6-foot-2 combo guard had an outstanding senior season for the Rams, a year where he was able to play fully healthy. Seamster racked up some nice statistics at 13.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.4 steals and was a First Team All-Mt Hood Conference selection. His all-around abilities on both ends of the floor should make an impact at Chaminade, which got a big year from former Ram Isaac Amaral-Artharee this past season.
Andrew Ingalls Andrew Ingalls 6'7" | PF Mountainside | 2020 State OR (2020 Mountainside) is going to continue his playing career at Chapman. When we last talked with the 6-foot-7 post during the Mavericks post-season run, he was looking at Chapman and Linfield and ultimately decided the D-III school in Southern California was the best fit for him. Ingalls was a force in the post for Mountainside, averaging 9.2 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting a robust 56 percent from the field.
Caden Long (2020 Baker City), who earned 4A Greater Oregon League MVP honors, signed with Northwest Christian (which will be renamed Bushnell in July). We didn’t get a chance to see the rangy 6-foot-4 wing in action this season but the coaching staff is excited about his potential. He’s long, very athletic, and while he’s still a work in progress the Beacons are looking forward to working with him over the next couple of years.
Pierce Roeder Pierce Roeder 6'0" | CG Sandy | 2020 State OR (2020 Sandy) will begin his collegiate career at the JC level after signing with Chemeketa CC. The 6-foot-2 guard was one of the top scorers in 6A this year, averaging 21.0 points. Roeder for sure specializes in hitting the deep three as he sank over three treys a game this season but he also has a mature body that allows him to finish plays at the basket. He will undoubtedly be a sought-after recruit after his playing career for the Storm.
In transfer news regarding former Oregon prep stars, a couple of West Linn alumni have made moves. Khalid Thomas (2017 West Linn) is coming back home after a year at Arizona State. The 6-foot-7 forward should have a bigger role with the Vikings for his last year of eligibility after he struggled to find traction with the Sun Devils, averaging 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds in 8.5 minutes a game. Thomas is an athletic performer who finishes at the rim but has a very smooth stroke from the perimeter – even in his limited time in Tempe, he shot over 46 percent from beyond the three-point line.
Braden Olsen (2017 West Linn) on the other hand will be heading further away from home as the guard moves from Seattle Pacific to Gannon, which is located in Northwest Pennsylvania. The 5-foot-11 point guard was getting good court time with the Falcons, averaging 8.4 points and 2.6 points in 20.8 minutes per game off the bench. But Oleson simply wanted a change of scenery and heads to the East Coast to the Golden Knights, who finished 14-13 last season.
Some others: Zach Bulgin (2018 West Salem) is also on the move having signed with Tacoma (Wash.) CC. Bulgin initially walked on at Point Loma Nazarene where he played sparingly in 2018-19, but he didn’t play this past year. Ammon Brown (2017 Sandy) has returned from an LDS mission and will suit up for Mt. Hood CC next season.
