There are so many players to observe, especially in a big state like Texas. Some guys just don’t get the same amount of attention that others are afforded. It may not be fair, but it’s reality.
I wanted to highlight a few prospects who have flown a bit under the radar. With that in mind, here are my selections for the Texas all-underrated team:
Guard
Grant Shaw Grant Shaw 5'10" | PG Prosper Rock Hill | 2021 State TX – 2021 5’10 Point Guard Prosper HS – Shaw is ranked just outside of our top 100 for the class of 2021. However, he has the skills to leap up a few spots. He always plays under control and makes smart decisions when the ball is in his hands. The soon-to-be senior floor general can hit jumpers from mid-range and behind the arc while also being able to finish through contact down low. Shaw could be poised for a huge season.
Guard
Rhino Hernandez – 2021 5’9 Point Guard Frisco Independence HS – This is one of those guys whose production may not always show up in the box score, but you can guarantee that he is going to contribute. Hernandez is a pass-first guard with a high motor and a nose for making plays. He is scrappy on defense, dives for loose balls, and constantly plays fast. I love how he lulls defenses to sleep with his unselfish passing and then starts to attack with threes off the bounce and driving layups.
Forward
Antwan Taylor – 2022 6’3 Shooting Guard/Small Forward Harker Heights HS – Taylor was listed as a small forward during the Prep Hoops 2019 Top 250 Expo. The two-guard spot probably suits him better, but he has the length and athleticism to keep up with bigger wings. His long strides allow him to glide into the paint with ease. He can finish above or below the rim and also defends well at the other end. I think this guy is wildly underrated.
Forward
Chase Ross Chase Ross 6'3" | SG Cushing Academy | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’5 Shooting Guard/Small Forward Plano West HS – This is another prospect who will likely be more of a shooting guard at the next level, but he operates as more of a forward for Plano West and is asked to do just about everything for the Wolves. Ross is currently the No. 60 ranked player in our 2021 rankings, but I think he can compete with anyone ranked above him. He is an exceptional athlete and a solid three-point shooter. His upside is through the roof.
Center
Gannon Parker – 2021 6’7 Power Forward/Center Richardson HS – Parker is a strong post player with a wide frame. He can really wreak havoc down low and is great at exploiting mismatches. Richardson’s big man also does a great job of passing out of bad looks in the paint and getting the ball into the hands of his guards. He does a lot of the dirty work for the Eagles. He is often overshadowed by the dynamic duo of Cason Wallace Cason Wallace 6'4" | CG Richardson | 2022 State #6 Nation TX and Rylan Griffen Rylan Griffen 6'5" | SG Richardson | 2022 State #72 Nation TX , but his contributions to the team are incredibly valuable.
