The continually-developing 7-foot-3, 265-post from Corvallis won’t be going to college quite yet. Instead, Reinalda will be using another year to develop for the college level – and it’s a unique option that he’s pursuing that he believes will help prepare himself.
“I will be playing U21 with Donar Basketball Academy, the development program of a pro club in Groningen, the Netherlands, and attending a sports magnet school,” Reinalda said. “Donar is a successful program, focusing on player development. Their U21 is one of the best teams in the nation in their age category. The program schedule is morning skills practice, school in the middle of the day, and team practice in the evenings, with games played on the weekends. The development program is run by Coach Pete Miller, who played basketball at San Jose State University in the 70’s and has been coaching in Europe for more than 25 years.”
Reinalda – a dual citizen of the United States and the Netherlands – went into more detail how this overseas prep school option became available to him.
“I found out about this program through my cousins, who live in the Netherlands and play with this program,” Reinalda said. “My older cousin, Rienk Mast, played his whole high school career with Donar Basketball Academy and now is finishing his redshirt freshman year at Bradley University in Illinois.”
A big man who has continued to make significant progress with his body and game the past couple of seasons, Reinalda put together a banner senior season in which he averaged 15.5 points, 12.6 rebounds, and almost five blocks per game, shooting a sizzling 74.7 percent from the field. While this garnered some interest from college programs, he felt this path for next season would be best for him all-around.
“I think this program is a good fit for me because it is focused on player development, skill work, and position-specific training,” Reinalda said. “The program also has a number of tall players, who I will get to practice against and train with, which will be a nice change from high school. This will help prepare me for college. I’ll be taking advantage of an extra year to become stronger and quicker, because I am young for my recruiting class (I am still 17). I will be looking to enter college as a freshman in the summer of 2021.”
Reinalda currently ranks as the #39 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
