He broke out in our eyes last August at the UIC Elite Camp and followed that up with an excellent junior season. Schwieger can really play above the rim and has a big time shooting stroke. Feathery touch that stretches with ease out to beyond the three point arc. Ability to play both the two and three spots. Skilled prospect with developmental upside. He talked with PHI about his junior year.
“As a team we felt overlooked in the beginning of the year using that as motivation for our season. I’d say that by the end of the season we proved those people wrong. Our year didn’t end how we hoped it would, but looking back we have nothing to hang our heads about. Individually I definitely improved a lot from last year and I think it’s mainly because of how much my role has changed. I also grew a lot since my sophomore year so that really helped me with attacking the rim and finishing with bigger defenders.”
What specific areas did he see the biggest jump as a junior?
“The biggest change was going from being a perimeter player sophomore year to attacking and showcasing my mid-range game more. Another jump that I made was definitely being able to alter shots and protect the rim.”
Currently Schwieger holds two offers from IUPUI and Robert Morris (PA). What other schools have been in communication?
“To name a few Loyola, Elon, Toledo, Drake, Colorado State, Belmont, William & Mary, North Dakota, Purdue Fort Wayne, Green Bay, and Wright State.”
He has taken visits to three programs to date.
“Unofficials to Loyola, Bradley, and Butler.”
Schwieger dived into each one of those programs and what stands out about them.
Loyola
“They have a really good culture there that is very family oriented. The coaches have been terrific. During my visit I got to talk with a few players and they were all super welcoming. Also the fact that it’s local is certainly a benefit.”
Bradley
“The coaches were great. It’s a program that is really on the rise. They had a great season and an opportunity to be a part of a successful program is important to me.”
Butler
“The basketball tradition at Butler and the high level fan base was very impressive. Of course Hinkle Field House is a special place. Really enjoyed the campus and the business school. They have a unique program where you get to run your own business as part of your undergraduate degree.”
This week he scored an offer from the new staff at UIC. Also heard from staff at Wisconsin!
Schwieger is certain to see his recruitment continue to expand. He checks in as the #13 overall prospect in the PHI 2021 Rankings.
