The program won the 5A state championship in 2019 and has continued to send players onto the next level. While many of their 2020 guys are off the board after an Elite 8 appearance this season, one of the key players to this year’s success and last year’s state championship is still on the board.
Paul Maldonado Paul Maldonado 6'0" | CG Phhoenix Prep Post Grad | 2021 State AZ , a 6’1 SG who plays club basketball with Prime AZ, has received interest from multiple levels but does not hold any offers at this point. Some of those schools included South Mountain Community College, Ottawa University, and Pima Community College. According to Maldonado, he carries a 3.3 GPA and he has an 18 on the ACT.
Further, when asked about what he wants in a school, he stated that he is “looking for a school that has a strong basketball program.” He also wants to find a school that has a “community that feels like home.”
Maldonado noted that he is willing to play at multiple levels and is willing to play out of state due to his strong desire to play. He is one of the top 2020 prospects who is still available.
While 6’1 is not an ideal height for a shooting guard, he has a solid handle and a great feel for the game. His basketball IQ is high as well as a grit that is rare. He can also shoot the basketball at an extremely high level.
According to the stats posted by Gilbert, Maldonado averaged a little under 12 points per game while shooting the basketball at 57% inside the 3 and at 43% from 3. Further, he averaged over two three pointers per game.
