These rankings include all classes between 2021, 2022 and 2023 and are based on how good we think the prospects will be at the next level. This is one of the hardest things to do because it encompasses all classes, but should be great for debates throughout the cities.
With no further ado, here’s a look at 25-16 for the Richmond area.
25) Evan Castellanos Evan Castellanos 6'6" | PF Hermitage | 2021 State VA | 6’5” PF | Hermitage 2021
Castellanos quietly had a breakout year at Hermitage as a junior and should be a guy that scholarship programs take a look at over the next few years. He’s a well built big that has great perimeter skills including the ability to hit shots from deep, and he can attack closeouts as well. He hits tough shots from multiple levels and has a great turn around he can make while being contested, and he rebounds well on both ends too.
24) Deshawn Goodwyn Deshawn Goodwyn 6'4" | SG George Wythe | 2022 State VA | 6’3” WG | George Wythe 2022
Goodwyn is a guy who should see his stock rise going into his junior year, and if you’re a coach looking for a sniper make your way to the Southside of Richmond to check him out. He has good size and is constantly moving without the basketball, he has terrific confidence in his shot and he’s a guy who is within range as soon as he crosses half court. He’s a guy who could shoot up this list if he continues to round out his game moving forward.
23) Dana Woodley Dana Woodley 6'4" | SG John Marshall | 2021 State VA | 6’4” WG | John Marshall 2021
Woodley is a guy who has grown both physically and within his game over the past few years, and his athletic ability is as good as anyone in the state. He’s an explosive finisher in transition with power and creativity above the rim, he can catch and shoot from deep and he has great body control around the rim as well. He recently picked up an offer from Southern Utah and he is set to blow up this summer if we have AAU.
22) Promyse Ferguson Promyse Ferguson 6'4" | SG LC Bird | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | LC Bird 2021
Ferguson is a guy that college coaches need to get to know as he is one of the most consistent shooters in the entire state and has continued to improve over time with the rest of his game. He’s a guy who has a quick release and good range, and his consistency from deep is something that many coaches will love. He has a good feel for the game and competes on both ends, and when he gets it going he can take over a game with his shooting ability.
21) Brycen Blaine Brycen Blaine 6'5" | SG LC Bird | 2022 GA | 6’3” WG | LC Bird 2022
Blaine is part of a young Bird group that has shown great potential and he showed flashes of being a division one prospect moving forward. He’s a guy with good size on the wing and the base skill set coaches will like as he’s able to make shots, guards well on and off the basketball and has shown that he can attack and finish in traffic around the rim. He’s a guy who’s primed to breakout this summer and next year as he continues to grow into his body and develop his ability to create off the bounce.
20) Christian Carden Christian Carden 6'4" | PF Varina | 2022 State VA | 6’4” F | Varina 2022
Carden was one of the breakout guys in the Richmond area as he helped lead Varina to a state tournament appearance and got better and more confident throughout the season. He played the four for them this year but he showed a good wing skill set including the ability to shoot it from deep, create space off the bounce and knock it down with consistency from the midrange and he’s an underrated rebounder and passer at his size as well. He’s a guy whose name is hot and should continue to improve as he grows into his body.
19) Luke Smith | 6’7” F | Collegiate 2023
Smith played an important role for Trinity Episcopal this past year off the bench for them and he announced after the season that he will be transferring to Collegiate School where he plans to reclassify and play for his AAU coach Del Harris. The younger brother of Boise State commit Burke Smith Burke Smith 6'10" | PF Trinity Episcopal | 2020 State #240 Nation VA , Luke has his own unique skill set at his size that includes the ability to handle the ball in transition and stretch the floor from deep. He’s a high IQ kid with a budding skill set and an extra year should do him wonders moving forward.
18) Caleb Kenney Caleb Kenney 6'6" | PF Douglas Freeman | 2021 State VA | 6’6” F | Douglas Freeman 2021
Kenney is a guy who would have had a chance to break out over the live periods these past few weekends with Team Richmond Garner Road as he’s a very unique prospect that high academic schools would love to take a look at. At 6’6” he’s extremely long and a smooth athlete, he’s able to play inside and out on the perimeter and he has a knack for being very productive on both ends of the floor. He shoots the midrange pull-up well, he finishes above the rim and he’s a versatile defender with a good motor. He recently picked up his first division one offer from North Florida.
17) Mac MacDonald Mac MacDonald 6'3" | SG Collegiate | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | Collegiate 2021
McDonald is another guy who would have been very popular over the live periods with high academic schools as most of them already know him from his breakout performance at Hoop Group Academic Elite last year. He’s improved immensely over the past two years from a guy who was strictly a catch-and-shoot player to now being able to put it on the deck and create his own shot and make tough shots from all over the floor. He’s instant offense and plays with a competitive chip, and he already holds an offer from Mount St. Mary’s with a lot of colleges showing interest.
16) Arbriel Winfield Arbriel Winfield 6'7" | PF LC Bird | 2022 VA | 6’7” F | LC Bird 2022
Winfield is a guy who is oozing with potential and is starting to make the transition from being an energetic leaper to a versatile offensive guy that can play inside and out. Over the course of his sophomore year at Bird you saw him become more and more confident and comfortable playing on the perimeter, and he’s shown the ability to hit shots from deep and catch and rip out of triple threats. He’s a big time athlete that his still growing and if he improves over the summer he’s primed for a huge year as a junior.
