Here are some the biggest breakout players from the 2019-20 season:
Owen Hekner, Fargo Davies
Hekner is one of the better 2021 prospects in North Dakota and he showed throughout his junior year that he’s capable of impacting the game in more ways than just shooting. He’s one of the best shooters in the state and knocked down 44 percent of his 3-pointers while averaging 11.6 points per game, but he’s an adept passer and a solid all-around defender.
Patrick Bath, Fargo Shanley
Bath has a chance to blossom into an elite prospect and he gave people a taste of his potential as a freshman, averaging 9.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He tailed off a bit as the season went on, but he finished his season on a high note with 11 points in the state tournament against Mandan. Watch out for him in the coming seasons.
Tyler Tollefson, Wahpeton
Tollefson emerged as one of the best pure shooters in the league as a junior, knocking down better than 40 percent of his 3-pointers on a high volume. He averaged 13.1 points per game on the season and will be one of the top guards in the EDC next year.
Cole Benson, Grand Forks Red River
Benson’s been a solid player for the Roughriders before, but he picked his game up even more as a senior, averaging 11.3 points while knocking down 40 percent on his 3-pointers on top of supplying excellent perimeter defense.
Mason Gravseth, Grand Forks Central
Gravseth was a solid player as a sophomore for the Knights but his impact on the game went to another level as an upperclassman, as he averaged 11.6 points and 8.0 rebounds. He’s not the biggest guy inside, but his motor and athleticism allow him to produce consistently. He’ll be one of the best bigs in the league next season.
Five More Breakout Guys
Grayson Haman, Fargo Davies
Haman’s breakout should surprise nobody as he was a solid rotation player as a junior and had a terrific summer before this season. But he went out and delivered an excellent all-around season as a senior, averaging 12 points, five rebounds and four assists while supplying top-notch defense at the point of attack.
Jacksen Moni, West Fargo Sheyenne
Moni saw sparing minutes as a sophomore for the Mustangs but moved into the starting lineup as a junior and was mostly solid, averaging 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. His position defense and toughness on the glass improved immensely as the season went on and he could be primed to take a big step again next year.
Carter Birrenkott, West Fargo
Birrenkott was solid as a sophomore and showed even more as a junior, averaging 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He’s efficient both from the field and at the free throw line and has the skillset to pose matchup issues for a lot of people. Watch out for him next year.
Carter Peratt, Fargo North
Peratt was a bright spot for the Spartans in his senior season, averaging 11.8 points per game while shooting 50 percent from 2-point range. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was a consistent second scorer behind Cayden Rickard all season, helping the Spartans improve as the season went on.
Kameron Arechigo, Fargo South
Arechigo emerged late in his sophomore year as a player to watch and turned in a solid junior season for the Bruins, averaging 11.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. If he can improve with his efficiency, he’ll have a chance to be among the best players in the EDC next season.
