Continue ReadingWith the 2019-20 high school basketball season officially over, and us being less than a week away from our newest Rankings update, we shift over focus to what prospects in the 2021 class emerged during the second half of the high school basketball season. Here are a few of the new names that jumped on our radar with their play and will surely be in our latest rankings.
Michael Wolf – Regis
The more you watch his game, the easier it is to enjoy all of the small things that he does. Wolf is a good rebounder for his size that is a solid mid-range shooter and is a player to rely on at the end of the game to hit a big shot or ice the game from the FT line. Wolf led Regis in scoring at 11.5 points a game and was a reliable rebounder despite being a guard at 4.4 boards a game. As soon as he opens up the rest of his game as a shooter that gets teammates involved and buys-in defensively, he can be one of the better guards in the state but for now, hops onto our rankings with eyes on him in his senior year.
Sam Carlson – Monarch
The 6’3 combo-guard out of Monarch was the team’s leading scorer this season as he stepped into more of a leadership role this season on varsity. Carlson averaged 12.8 points a game as he found a rhythm late in the season, scoring in double-figures in the final six games. Carlson not only gets to the rim and scores but is a sniper from deep as well. He shot 46% from the field, and if he gets an open look, bottoms up. Carlson is a volume shooter that is a microwave option for Monarch. He will have plenty of eyes on him next season and jumps into our newest rankings with the season that he had.
Jaylen Carrizales – Vista Peak
Carrizales is a robust and gritty leader that plays with a chip on his shoulder. He is a shifty guard that is tough to stay in front of and a playmaker that can score in various ways. This season he MADE us notice him as he helped lead Vista Peak to a 20-5 overall record and put up 11.1 points a game. Carrizales is a player that can create for himself but also plays well off of the ball. He uses his speed to get to the rim and blow by defenders, is a solid perimeter defender, and is a player that will jump onto our rankings update with ease. Expecting a big senior season that the rest of the state catches up.
Camden Smithburg Camden Smithburg 6'0" | PG Limon | 2021 State CO – Limon
The numbers he put up during his junior campaign at Limon were outstanding, and a productive summer could have helped him prove that it does not matter the competition, he is one that competes at a high level. Because he plays at a smaller school, the question will come up about the level of competition he faces on a nightly basis, but he is a player that jumped onto our radars last summer at an event, and we knew he was poised for a big season. Smithburg was the best player and team’s leading scorer as he put up 16.8 points a game with four rebounds and just under three steals to go along with it. He has a knack at making clutch plays and was outstanding in big games. He knows how to put the ball in the hoop, and that is why he was named as a 1st-Team All-State member in his junior season with enormous expectations for himself and his team as he led Limon to a 23-2 record. He jumps onto our rankings and into a generous spot at that.
Ty Bergman – Regis
Bergman checks off all of the necessary boxes that are a coaches dream and is precisely why he is a highly touted option right now. The craziest part is, he popped out of nowhere, and with how he played this season, he is here to stay. Bergman is a skilled 6’7 high academic wing that can shoot the 3-ball. He also is a player that can guard multiple positions and protect the rim. For a player with his size, he can handle the ball and has excellent vision on the court with a great overall feel for the game and understands when to find an open teammate. Bergman put up 7.1 points and 5.5 rebounds a game while being named to 2nd team All-Conference. He had a solid season this year, jumps into our rankings, and will be a player to watch moving forward.
