Continue ReadingThere are many hidden gems in each CIF Southern Section league, especially in the Moore League. The league has its fair share of players who are garnering well-deserved attention, but then there are the others who are being overlooked.
These select five up-and-upcoming underrated talents each developed well in their game this past season and are candidates to be a stock riser next season.
Guard — 2021 Jordan Harvey/Compton
Jordan Harvey was a key role player in the Compton Tarbabes’ success this past season, which paid off as he earned All-Moore League Second Team honors. Harvey is a durable guard who can make an impact both with and without the ball. He can also be impactful on offense in a catch-and-shoot role, which teammates often relied on him for. Defenses were often surprised at his overall 3-point shot-making ability.
With several seniors on the team off to the college level, look for Harvey to receive an expanded role in the offense next season, which would task him with more on-ball responsibilities.
Guard — 2022 Gabriel Cummings Gabriel Cummings 6'2" | SG Long Beach Poly | 2022 State CA-S /Long Beach Poly
Another under-the-radar shooter from the Moore League is Gabriel Cummings Gabriel Cummings 6'2" | SG Long Beach Poly | 2022 State CA-S . The Jackrabbits guard has a vital lefty-shot that has developed quite well. He helped in extrapolating Long Beach Poly’s offense by spacing the floor and providing a viable shooting option from the wings or the corners. He has all of the potential to grow into a reliable sharpshooting threat that can collapse defenses.
However, Cummings must continue to work on shooting from just outside the paint, whether it is on the baseline or top of the key. With vast improvements across the board from his offensive arsenal, look for him to be a serious contender for an All-Moore League First Team selection next season.
Guard — 2022 Dallas Cooper/Wilson
Wilson should have high hopes for the future of its program because of players like Dallas Cooper. The sophomore guard was the scrappy and relentless player for the Wilson Bruins. Even as a guard, Cooper was poised to make an impact across the board, from rebounding to perimeter defense. He epitomizes what it means to be a hard-working, high-energy player on the floor. Cooper has much to polish over on his overall offensive game, but the potential is there for him to flourish in Moore League play.
Forward — 2021 Solomon Jones/Long Beach Poly
The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits were one of the most well-balanced teams in the CIF-SS Division 1 rank because of players like 2021 talent Solomon Jones. The 6’9” forward is a potent two-way player thanks to his grand influence on both sides of the floor. With a team filled with superb outside shooters, Jones balances the offense with his constant presence in the post. His feet are constantly active and moving. He also gives the team an option when it comes to taking advantage of size mismatches within the paint. On the other side of the floor, he cleans up the glass very well. Jones is more than capable of producing a double-digit rebound showing due to his grand ability to box out against his opponent in the post.
Forward — 2022 Malachi Scott Malachi Scott 6'6" | SF Long Beach Jordan | 2022 CA-S /Jordan
Jordan has an up-and-coming emerging talent in Malachi Scott Malachi Scott 6'6" | SF Long Beach Jordan | 2022 CA-S . The 6’6” forward was just the competitive force that the Panthers needed over the season.
His game is more geared towards the restricted area, but he has a constant influence across the floor. Scott is a difficult scorer to guard because of his good awareness in paint positioning coupled with his pure athleticism; he is good for a highlight-reel dunk or two per game. He showcased his scoring skill set in league contests such as his 29-point performance over Wilson. On defense, he is growing in this area of his game as he has developed into a revered shot-blocker.
He was named to the All-Moore League Second team for the 2019–2020 season, but he should almost be a lock for a first-team selection over his final two seasons.
