Jaylen Jones (East Nashville)
“Real calm,” shared East Nashville Head Coach Avery Patton. “Poised. Knows the game. He is going to be something else.” Tennessee State University offered him earlier this year. It was the first of surely many offers to come. Jones’ older brother, Isaiah Jones Isaiah Jones 6'8" | SF Arlington | 2021 State TN is a top 15 player in the Class of 2021.
Isaiah West (Goodpasture)
Absurdly athletic, Isaiah West floats to the tin with an uncommon bravery. The freshman reminds of a young O.J. Mayo with his unnatural strength coupled with quick bounce and seemingly limitless potential. Like many of the players on this list, West built a tremendous reputation on the AAU circuit in recent years.
Rodgerick Robinson (Middleton)
It was not a great season for Middleton High School, but one bright spot certainly emerged in freshman Rodgerick Robinson. In his first high school run RR rattled off 10.4 points per game.
Brevin Klym (Franklin)
Elite catch-and-shoot guy. Think young Mason McKnatt Mason McKnatt 6'1" | SG Grace Christian | 2020 State TN . Like McKnatt, Brevin is a gym rat who devotes himself to shooting, shooting, and shooting.
Kolby Searcy (Lighthouse Christian)
Wing guard with versatility. Searcy occasionally takes unconventional routes to the basket, sidestepping defenders with a lovely smoothness. Shooting is coming along nicely. Searcy does and will always play above the rim.
Jordan Carter (Grace Christian)
Jordan Carter finished his freshman year averaging a solid 9.9 ppg. Carter put up 20 points or greater twice. “He is a really big-time baseball player,” said Mason McKnatt Mason McKnatt 6'1" | SG Grace Christian | 2020 State TN . “He is going to be playing big-time college baseball. He is a really, really good athlete and he is really strong for his age. He puts in a good amount of time. He likes to work and work hard on his own time.”
CJ Tinnon (Grace Christian)
CJ is a lesser-known guard in middle Tennessee. There is some promise to his game though. Tinnon sees the floor well for a freshman.
“He got a bunch of experience this year as a freshman,” said D2-signee Mason McKnatt Mason McKnatt 6'1" | SG Grace Christian | 2020 State TN . “If he keeps on working, then he will be a pretty good high school point guard. He knows the game well and he is a really good passer. If he can shoot the ball at a consistent level and make good decisions, then he will be a good HS point guard.”
Marcel Reed (M.B.A.)
Fantastic athlete. Might be a football star in college. If he elects to stick with basketball, then Reed will be a shooter, slasher, defender at an elite level. Reed managed to make a huge impact for a deep M.B.A. team largely because he is simply too athletic to keep on the bench. The fluidity of movement, the calmness of energy exertion makes Reed the rare potential superstar.
Joshua Roberts (M.B.A.)
Exceptional lower body strength. Roberts grew up as both a runner and a hooper. With M.B.A. this season Roberts was not the go-to guy, but he absolutely impacted games with rebounding and defense. With his absurdly powerful legs Roberts slides those feet like a spider. Defending wings generally limits taller talents from ever playing on the wing beyond high school. This Class of 2023 guard/forward showed a stunning capacity for thwarting those speedy, squirrely guards.
Wilton Alexander (Maplewood)
Crafty guard. Alexander is confident to a startling degree and it helps his game. Upon the touch Alexander is already thinking ball in rim. Without hesitation the gunner sees and takes difficult shots. Maplewood leaned on him heavy despite running out three accomplished seniors. Was Wilton the only freshman to lead his team in scoring statewide? Jellico’s Hayden Llewellyn comes to mind. Anybody else?
Davaki Garr (Ensworth)
Ensworth sophomore-to-be Davaki Garr created a lot of buzz recently. Ensworth’s senior class noticed how dominant Garr can be in spurts. Now he just needs to string those spurts together to be a superb leading scorer.
“He has a good grasp on the game for being so young, but he shoots extremely well and is also an elite dribbler,” said D1-signee Chaz Lanier Chaz Lanier 6'3" | CG Ensworth | 2020 State TN .
