The younger brother of one of the state’s all-time great lead guards, Hilmer plays at 100 mph constantly, which can be a great thing, but can also get him into trouble at times. He has a quick first step and is a great ball handler, and he has the ability to get to the rim whenever he wants at the 2A level. He has a nice mid-range game, and is a fantastic passer with great court vision. He takes a lot of chances on the defensive end of the floor, and will need to improve his perimeter stroke, but he’s a fiery competitor with a strong skill set.
22 | Corey Miner Corey Miner 6'0" | PG Mason City | 2022 State IA | PG | Mason City
A compact lefty scoring guard with a nice looking perimeter stroke, Miner averaged 13 points a game at the 4A level as a sophomore. He’s a good shooter who uses that ability to open up the rest of his game, attacking bad closeouts by getting to the rim, where he can finish effectively with either hand. He needs to continue working on ball handling and decision making after putting up 64 turnovers against 60 assists.
23 | Elijah Ward Elijah Ward 6'2" | CG Prairie | 2022 State IA | CG | Prairie
Ward is a talented combo guard with good length and creative finishing abilities around the rim. He looks to attack the bucket but is also a capable 3-point shooter. Uses his length and quickness to make an impact on the defensive end of the floor, and contributes on the glass.
24 | Caleb Holmes Caleb Holmes 6'2" | SF Hinton | 2022 State IA | SF | Hinton
Holmes is an efficient scoring wing with good size and length, and a nice looking perimeter stroke. He had a few big-time scoring games for Hinton en route to averaging 21.7 points a game. Needs to continue to improve ball handling to help him create his own shot better.
25 | Zach Erwin Zach Erwin 6'6" | SF Camanche | 2022 State IA | SF | Camanche
Physical, athletic and skilled, Erwin is capable of doing a little bit of everything on the floor. He can score inside and out, rebounds well, is a good and willing passer, and he uses his length and versatility to impact the game on the defensive end as well. Averaged 9.1 points, but ranked second on a loaded Camanche team in rebounding, assists and blocks, and third in steals.
26 | Christian Barnes Christian Barnes 5'10" | PG Iowa City West | 2022 State IA | PG | Iowa City West
Barnes is a small, quick lead guard who is an excellent perimeter defender both on and off the ball. When he’s engaged, few players in the 2022 class can lock up like him. He’s a capable perimeter shooter and a good ball handler and facilitator.
27 | Dawson Forgy Dawson Forgy 5'11" | PG Winterset | 2022 State IA | PG | Winterset
Forgy is small, but hyper quick and efficient. He was among the state leaders in assists with 154, against just 57 turnovers, and shot 51% from the floor (43.3% from 3). He’s a smart lead guard who is always looking for the open man, has the ability to take his defender off the dribble and is a solid perimeter shooter. He has good quickness and hands on the defensive end.
28 | Gunner Meyer Gunner Meyer 6'5" | SF Wapsie Valley | 2022 State IA | SF | Wapsie Valley
Few players had a better state tournament week than Meyer did, showcasing a little bit of everything in his arsenal. He’s got good size and length at 6-4, is a really good athlete and can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot it from 3. He’ll need to improve his ball handling and ability to create his own shot, but he’s strong in catch-and-shoot situations and is a solid contributor across the board.
29 | Hogan Hansen Hogan Hansen 6'3" | SF Waverly-Shell Rock | 2022 State IA | SF | Waverly-Shell Rock
A volume scorer with decent size, Hansen is capable of getting red hot from deep and carrying a team for a stretch of time. But his overall efficiency needs to improve, as he shot just 38.4% from the floor (he was a solid 38.3% from 3). He also needs to clean up his ball handling and decision making, as he had 102 turnovers in 22 games as a sophomore. But few players will score like he does over the next few years.
30 | Noah Mack Noah Mack 6'0" | SG Assumption | 2022 State IA | SG | Assumption
Mack came up to varsity about midway through the year and was an impact player for a strong 3A team. A confident guard with good length, he is a solid perimeter shooter with a quick release who moves really well off the ball. A capable ball handler and decision maker who should see his role increase a ton next year following the graduation of Sean Peeters Sean Peeters 6'5" | PF Assumption | 2020 State IA .
