DeVries has made the push to the top spot as he has emerged as one of the best pure shot makers we’ve seen at Prep Hoops Iowa. He’s got great size and length, and a silky smooth stroke out to the NBA line. A talented playmaker who makes tough, contested shots at an absurdly high level, he’ll be an excellent addition to Drake (where his dad is the head coach), should he choose to go that route. Creighton, where his dad was a long-time assistant, is also said to be in the running.
2 | Payton Sandfort Payton Sandfort 6'7" | SF Waukee | 2021 State #138 Nation IA | SF | Waukee
A sharpshooter with great size and length, Sandfort had one of the best summers of anyone in the state last year, leading to a number of D1 offers. A knockdown shooter both off the dribble and the catch, he’s also a soli ddefender who can defend multiple positions and has an extremely high basketball IQ. He currently holds offers from Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, Air Force, Drake and Loyola Chicago.
3 | Michael Duax Michael Duax 6'5" | SF Hempstead | 2021 State IA | SF | Hempstead
Duax is a big wing with the ability to score from all three levels and take over a game on the defensive end of the floor. He’s a high IQ player who doesn’t force anything, is remarkably efficient and defends multiple positions. He’s just a solid all-around player who does a little bit of everything really well. He has committed to play for Ben Jacobson at Northern Iowa.
4 | Chase Courbat Chase Courbat 6'9" | C Cedar Falls | 2021 State IA | C | Cedar Falls
One of the best defensive big men in the Midwest, Courbat understands angles and positioning on that end of the floor about as well as any young big man we’ve seen at Prep Hoops Iowa. His offensive game is still a work in progress, but he has good touch around the rim. He just needs to continue adding post moves and improving his foot work. If he can add a bit of range to his game, watch out.
5 | Emarion Ellis Emarion Ellis 6'4" | SF Assumption | 2021 State #141 Nation IA | SG | Davenport Central
A big wing, Ellis has one of the highest upsides of any player in this class. A talented shot maker with good athleticism and length, he’s a rhythm scorer at this point, but once he gets it rolling, he’s nearly impossible to slow down with his ability to score from all three levels. His perimeter stroke is still a work in progress, and he needs to work on becoming more consistent there, but he’s a capable shooter, especially off the dribble. He can also impact the game on the defensive end with his length and athleticism.
6 | Caleb Schlaak Caleb Schlaak 6'7" | SF Kennedy | 2021 State IA | SF | Kennedy
A 6-7 combo forward with the ability to score inside and out, Schlaak has a really strong face-up game and great footwork and touch on the block. He has good size and length, and as he continues to add strength, he’ll be a bully in the paint at the high school level. His future will probably be out on the perimeter, and he’ll need to continue to add some consistency to his jumper and improve his ball handling, but there are a lot of tools here.
7 | Landon Wolf Landon Wolf 6'5" | CG Cedar Falls | 2021 State IA | SG | Cedar Falls
The 6-5 wing has a similar build to older brother Logan Wolf, with incredible length and great size for his position. Wolf is a knockdown shooter, both off the dribble and the catch, who shot 44% from behind the arc while leading the Tigers in scoring. He contributes across the board, and as his ball handling continues to tighten up, he’ll turn into a dynamic all-around scoring threat.
8 | Angelo Winkel Angelo Winkel 6'9" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2021 State IA | C | Bishop Garrigan
A bouncy 6-9 forward with good size and athleticism, Winkel can dominate games at the 1A level. He needs to continue to iron out his jumper, but he has good footwork and touch around the bucket, with an array of post moves and the ability to finish with either hand. He has a lot of tools, and if he can continue to get stronger and tougher, he could be a really good player at the next level. 6-9 forwards with his hands and touch don’t just grow on trees.
9 | Marcus Morgan Marcus Morgan 6'3" | SG Iowa City West | 2021 IA | CG | Iowa City West
A really good 4-sport athlete, Morgan could have a future as a quarterback, pitcher or combo guard (also talented in the high jump on the track). He’s got a smooth game on the hardwood, with a silky jumper and extended range. He’s a good passer, and a great perimeter defender who moves his feet well and uses his length and strength effectively.
10 | Keaton Kutcher Keaton Kutcher 6'2" | SG Mount Vernon | 2021 State IA | SG | Mount Vernon
One of the state’s best pure shooters, Kutcher can fill it up in a hurry from deep. His shooting percentages dropped a bit this year, but he was still just under 40% while knocking down 75 3s on the season. A smart player who doesn’t turn it over, he gets his teammates involved, competes on the defensive end and is working on turning himself into an all-around scoring threat.
