What would we see this spring if these young men were hitting the hardwood? Every spring we see some breakout players, and without doubt, we would see that again this year.
We will take a look at 5 sophomores that I feel would have been likely candidates to have breakout seasons this spring. These could be players raising their rank as prospects, jumping a level in the minds of scouts and coaches, or even seemingly coming out from nowhere.
Dane Coleman Dane Coleman 6'3" | SF Davison | 2022 State MI (G/F, Davison)
Coleman is a gritty player that needs to be seen first hand to be appreciated. While he can shoot and handle, it’s his contributions that may not show up in the stat sheet that make him special. Coleman’s stock would rise this spring playing in front of scouts and coaches.
Robert Davis Jr. Robert Davis Jr. 6'6" | SG Hamtramck | 2022 State MI (SG, Farmington)
Davis Jr. really showed out in the last half of high school season. That would have continued into spring grassroots season without a doubt. The shot taker and shot maker is quickly rising up the prospect rankings with or without a spring season.
Orlando Lovejoy Orlando Lovejoy 6'3" | CG 1 of 1 Prep | 2022 State NC (PG, Summit Academy)
He’s already ranked high, but trust me, he’s moving up. Lovejoy is electric with the ball, having the ability to create looks for himself and his teammates off the bounce. Lovejoy would be showing us all Division 1 talent during the spring grassroots season.
Nic Stump Nic Stump 6'5" | PF Grand Haven | 2022 State MI (PF, Grand Haven)
I really liked what I saw from Stump at the Prep Hoops Top 250, and he continued to grow as a player during high school season. I believe that Stump would have taken another step this spring during grassroots season. He’s a bouncy 4 that plays with a lot of energy.
Alex Watters Alex Watters 6'1" | CG Lansing Catholic | 2022 State MI (CG, Lansing Catholic)
Watters plays for a smaller school that may not be littered with newspaper press. But trust me, he can play and has a huge upside. I’m talking top 15 in the class type of potential. It would have been fun to see him square off with some of the other big names in grassroots season.
