What would we see this spring if these young men were hitting the hardwood? Every spring we see some breakout players, and without doubt, we would see that again this year.
We will take a look at 5 juniors that I feel would have been likely candidates to have breakout seasons this spring. These could be players raising their rank as prospects, jumping a level in the minds of scouts and coaches, or even seemingly coming out from nowhere.

Hypothetical Grassroots Breakouts – Sophomores
Ty Fortney Ty Fortney 6'8" | PF Taylor Trillium | 2021 MI (PF, Wayne Memorial)
Fortney used last spring and summer to catapult up the prospect rankings. There’s no reason he wouldn’t have done the same this spring. Fortney is a nasty above the rim finisher and must be accounted for on the break. He’s become one of the top post prospects in Michigan.
Ryan Grantham Ryan Grantham 6'4" | SG Grand Rapids Catholic | 2021 State MI (G/F, Grand Rapids Catholic Central)
Grantham is a shooter through and through. He has a quick release and good balance on the shot. Grantham can shoot off the dribble or the catch. As he has become more aggressive with his weapon, his game has excelled. I feel like Grantham was ready to put his shooting on display this spring.
Linden Holder Linden Holder 6'0" | PG De La Salle | 2021 State MI (PG, De La Salle)
Holder really grabbed my attention last spring and summer. He was an efficient floor general that seemed to know when to find a teammate and when to get a bucket. Holder proved that he can be trusted as a coach on the floor. I really think he was due for another outstanding spring season.
Keyon Menifield Keyon Menifield 6'2" | PG Flint Beecher | 2021 State MI (PG, Flint Beecher)
Mennifield sent a message loud and clear this high school season. He let everyone know that with the loss of Jalen Terry Jalen Terry 6'1" | PG Flint Beacher | 2020 State #86 Nation MI and Earnest Sanders at Flint Beecher, he’s next in line. Mennifield could and would have carried the momentum from high school season straight into grassroots ball. Mennifield is a lightning bolt that excels in transition.
Kevyn Robertson Kevyn Robertson 6'5" | PF Walled Lake Northern | 2021 State MI (PF, Walled Lake Northern)
Robertson is an underrated prospect in my opinion. He’s not a flashy recruit that garners all the press, but he’s an energy player with solid fundamentals. Robertson’s intangibles really show up in grassroots games, so I think he would have raised some eyebrows this spring.
