All eight classification champs grouped together and seeded or even paired at random to set up a bracket to determine the overall champion of the state. With no basketball being played currently, why not breakdown some hypothetical matchups in this new series and let the fan vote determine who will advance to the next round?
We will provide a preview, a thoughtful prediction and let you – the fans – decide the fate of each game.
No. 4 6AChattahoochee (25-7) vs. No. 5 5ADutchtown (28-4)
Two first-time state champions lock horns in the first round.
Chattahoochee’s perimeter firepower vs. Dutchtown’s overwhelming inside game is a clash of styles. Both AJ White AJ White 5'11" | PG Chattahoochee | 2021 State GA and Rice-signee Cam Sheffield Cam Sheffield 6'6" | SG Chattahoochee | 2020 State GA scored over 20 points per game to lead the Cougars. Sheffield dumped in 31 points and 8 rebounds while White had 22 points in Chattahoochee’s 69-66 Class 6A Championship over Lanier. Dutchtown saw Gardner-Webb-signee Jamaine Mann Jamaine Mann 6'6" | PF Dutchtown | 2020 State #373 Nation GA go for 20 points and 12 rebounds and 6-foot-8 unsigned senior Cam Bryant Cam Bryant 6'8" | SF Dutchtown | 2020 State GA post 18 points in the Bulldogs’ 57-44 domination of Cedar Shoals to win the Class 5A title.
Dutchtown is big and athletic across the board. Coach Jordan Griffin brings complex sets and systems from the college ranks including his stifling amoeba defense which has confused some of the best of the best in Georgia. The Cougars will need to have a plan in place for when the Bulldogs switch defenses and show them looks that they haven’t seen before. Kameron Hobbs Kameron Hobbs 6'2" | PG Dutchtown | 2020 State GA will need to be Dutchtown’s third scoring option as will Franklin Bailey Franklin Bailey 6'1" | SG Chattachoochee | 2020 State GA for Chattahoochee. If Dutchtown fails to find Bailey on the three-point line, he will scorch them from deep.
Chattahoochee scored 20 of their 69 points in the paint while Dutchtown netted 34 of their 57 up close. The pressure will be on 6-foot-8 David McDaniel to rebound and protect the rim against the 6-foot-6 Mann and the explosive Bryant. McDaniel had 14 rebounds and 2 blocks in the title game but will have his hands full with the physicality and athleticism of Dutchtown’s front court. Jaelyn Anderson and Isaiah Placide Isaiah Placide 6'4" | SF Dutchtown | 2020 State GA could be X-Factors for Dutchtown and if they win their one-on-one matchups and can provide energy and productivity, Dutchtown could advance to the next round.
Line: Dutchtown -3.5
