Continue ReadingIt’s been another week of lock down in the majority of states, but the recruiting news continues to flow. Over the past seven days there has been plenty of commitments, offers, virtual tours given and other recruiting nuggets that have been relayed to us. I’ll break down the latest findings in this week’s DMV recruiting report.
COMMITMENTS
While Brandon Murray Brandon Murray 6'5" | SG IMG Academy | 2021 #220 Nation FL had plenty of high major programs waiting for his decision, the 6-foot-4 guard decided that he will do a post-grad prep year at IMG Academy for the 2020-21 season. Georgia, Georgetown, Rhode Island, DePaul and East Tennessee State made up Murray’s final five schools, but reclassing to the 2021 class should bring in some new names to his recruitment. Murray recently told Prep Hoops that Baylor is the latest school to reach out following his announcement. It will be interesting to see the impact Murray can make in a different environment as a post-grad player.
Will Thomas Will Thomas 6'6" | SF Mervo | 2020 State MD announced his pledge to Morgan State. A tremendous signing for the Bears, Thomas chose his hometown school over high-level JuCo programs such as Harcum and Barton Community College. At 6-foot-5 and ambidextrous, Thomas is one of the versatile players you’ll find in the DMV. His ability to make an impact in a variety of categories will bode well for him as the Bears seem to be putting together an impressive body of work.
This past Tuesday Milton Matthews Milton Matthews 6'2" | SG Rock Creek Christian | 2020 State #319 Nation MD committed to North Carolina A&T. The 6-foot-2 lefty is a sniper with precision from range. His quick release will make up for his lack of height for the shooting guard position. Matthews filled a vital role on a tough-nosed Rock Creek Christian team this past season.
Josiah Freeman Josiah Freeman 6'4" | SG Manassas Park | 2020 State #298 Nation VA was once committed to Buffalo, but decided to reopen his recruitment and pledge to Western Michigan last weekend. Freeman built a name for himself playing a big role in Paul IV’s tradition of winning. The 6-foot-4 guard brings solid size for his position along with outside shooting and versatility on the defensive end.
Middleburg Academy guard Kaylen Oweh will head to St. Thomas Aquinas, a Division II powerhouse located in Sparkill, New York. The 6-foot-3 combo guard can get to the rim at will and presents athleticism and strength that overwhelms most players at his position. I thought for sure that Oweh would land a Division I offer, but it further speaks to how great of a get Oweh will be for the Spartans.
A week after writing about Sherwood senior Nate Lacey Nate Lacey 6'4" | SF Sherwood | 2020 State MD receiving his first scholarship offer, the 6-foot-4 guard didn’t make Washburn University wait long to get his commitment. Lacey is an athletic guard that can guard multiple positions, finish above the rim and provide toughness.
Daniel Allen committed to Augusta on Tuesday. Allen played last season at Mt. Zion Prep and will bring crafty point guard play and someone who can make plays on both ends of the floor.
Howard Community College head coach Mike Smelkinson landed another solid commitment in St. Charles guard Omar McGann Omar McGann 6'2" | CG St. Charles | 2020 State MD . The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for the 20-0 Spartan who were set to play in the Class 3A Final Four. McGann is a three-point threat who can fill it up in a hurry both off the dribble or off the catch. He also provides size and length at the guard slot.
Harford Community College earned two commitments over the week from 6-foot Southern point guard Jay Carter and 6-foot-4 Gwynn Park wing Markeith Franks Markeith Franks 6'5" | PF Gwynn Park | 2020 State MD . Carter is a shifty, downhill guard that can beat his match up off the dribble and finish in the painted area while embracing contact on his way. He’s a pesky defender that should suit well in the MD JuCo Conference. I haven’t had the chance to see Franks in person, but watching a good amount of film helped me see his relentless motor. Franks makes a lot of plays that may not show up on the box score. He moves well without the ball, can finish through contact on his shots at the rim and bring energy to the glass with his length.
OFFERS
St. Vincent Pallotti/Mid-Atlantic Select senior guard Anthony Blunt Anthony Blunt 6'2" | CG St. Vincent Pallotti | 2020 State MD received an offer from UMass-Lowell. This is Blunt’s first Division I offer as a slew of Ivy League schools had been tracking the 6-foot-2 combo guard for some time. While Cornell is still being considered, don’t be surprised if Blunt accepts the UMass-Lowell offer rather quickly considering his brother, Allin, also plays for the Riverhawks and will be going into his junior season.
2021 DeMatha wing Jordan Hawkins Jordan Hawkins 6'5" | SF DeMatha | 2021 State #41 Nation MD adds another Big East offer from Georgetown and now holds a total of four offers from said conference with Xavier, Marquette and UConn being the others who have extended offers. Hawkins will be a hot commodity with his size, length and versatility as a scorer. He’s witnessing his offer list grow steadily, but with an AAU stage this spring, he would’ve exploded.
2021 Bishop Walsh point guard Jalen Miller Jalen Miller 6'2" | PG Bishop Walsh | 2021 State #151 Nation MD received an offer from Towson. Miller is a high-ceiling prospect that scratched the surface this season and as a result, college programs are buying in. With a few Patriot League schools already on his list, adding Towson may force other CAA schools to invest time in Miller’s film. This certainly won’t be his last offer.
2021 River Hill guard Nick Marshall Nick Marshall 6'4" | CG River Hill | 2021 State MD was offered by Fairfield. The 6-foot-4 guard who’s a proven scorer adds the Stags to his list of offers comprised of Howard and Loyola (MD).
2022 John Carroll guard adds another offer to his list with St. John’s. The 6-foot-3 lefty is one of the best shooters you’ll find in his class and has limitless range. The Johnnies becomes the third Big East team to offer Commander along with DePaul and Xavier, both of which offered in the last month.
OTHER RECRUITMENT NEWS
2021 Dulaney point guard Ryan Conway Ryan Conway 6'0" | PG Dulaney | 2021 State #111 Nation MD announced his final six list consisting of Marquette, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Stanford and Vanderbilt. The 6-foot-1 guard is one of the top scorers in the DMV area and is known for putting up eye-popping numbers throughout his high school career. Rutgers, Marquette and Seton Hall should all be watched closely as Conway plans to make his commitment on May 2.

2021 St. Frances guard Khyrie Staten Khyrie Staten 6'2" | CG St. Frances | 2021 State MD had a virtual meeting/tour with Mount St. Mary’s. The 6-foot-2 guard witnessed his stock increase significantly with his play this season and as a result is getting the Division I attention he deserves. The Mount has yet to offer, but one could be on the horizon once they get Staten on campus.
