Continue ReadingThe high school basketball season has wrapped up and we are awaiting the start of travel team ball. We are not quite ready for a full update to the 2021 class rankings, but we did want to dive into a few prospects that impressed us during the second half of the season. Here are our Class of 2021 2nd Half Stock Risers!
Julian Campbell Julian Campbell 6'6" | C Palatine | 2021 State IL (Palatine)
The junior 6’7” post has a wide body which creates space on the interior. Campbell is a skilled guy though too. This big man was fantastic when we saw him against Willowbrook. He hit a pair of threes and several mid-range jumpers in this game. The aspect that we liked was he didn’t live and die with that though like we had seen earlier in his career. Finished well around the hoop with hook shots, and-1s, put backs, spin moves, and converting dump offs. Not the best athlete and doesn’t have much lift at this stage. Did run the floor hard for one bucket. Quality area rebounder that did a nice job grabbing boards on both ends.
Donald Coats Donald Coats 6'7" | SF Thornton | 2021 IN (Thornton)
Coats is very intriguing. He emerged as a junior prospect putting his name on our radar as a versatile piece for one of the best teams in Illinois. The 6’7” forward has excellent length and good size. The projectable 2021 snatched rebounds, hit a pair of runners, and scored inside on a jump stop in one of the games we saw him. Flashes upside that we are excited to see more of when basketball gets back underway.
Amar Augillard Amar Augillard 6'5" | SF Zion Benton | 2021 FL (Zion Benton)
Augillard impressed us during the holidays and then he was outstanding in their upset win at Evanston. Augillard is a powerfully built 6’5” 200 pound wing that looks like a college football defensive end. He plays with a tremendously high motor and imprints his will on his opponent. That is exactly what he did against Evanston overpowering them on the glass and with his physicality. Threw down several huge dunks and was powerful finishing at the cup. There was much more than just that as he shot it very well from three and passed it with a ton of flair.
JT Welch (Bloomington Central Catholic)
Welch opened our eyes at the O’Fallon Shootout. He stands at 5’10”. This flashy point guard plays with a lot of flair. He has shifty handles and won off the dribble getting in the lane for acrobatic scoop shots in the lane. Decent three point shooter. Creative passer that is also a pesky defender at the point.
Fred Poole (Simeon)
Poole really came on strong the second half of the season quietly. The Simeon two guard did it on both ends of the floor. Played well defensively against some quality scorers. Offensively he can hit a three, got to the foul line, and overall was more aggressive.
Dre Scott (Pinckneyville)
Scott is a bigger wing at 6’4” with a nice frame and strength. For his high school team he plays more inside, but is a wing at the college level. Effective in transition and has a burst when he catches the ball in space. Efficient around the hoop.
Braden Flanagan Braden Flanagan 5'10" | PG Olney | 2021 IN (Olney)
Flanagan was one of the more productive junior guards in the 618. We saw him play impressive against Salem in February. He is the floor general for the Tigers doing a lot of the ball handling and is a sound passer. Crafty scorer that can connect on runners and baseline takes. Knocked down several momentum shifting threes off movement.
Carson Prost Carson Prost 6'1" | SG Mt. Vernon | 2021 State IL (Mt. Vernon)
Prost is a 6’3” two guard that had a breakout performance at the Salem Invitational Tournament. He had several tough drives where he scored taking it to the rack with authority. Gritty guard that made nice passes in the lane.
