What are the stipulations? None, really. Regardless of class and regardless of positions, what our top 10?
#1 Ben Johnson Ben Johnson 6'3" | CG Lexington Catholic | 2021 State KY , Lexington Catholic (2021) – The likely front runner to be 2021’s Mr. Basketball, Ben is the top player in the city and it’s not especially close. As a Junior, Johnson led the city in scoring with 25.6 points per game with shooting splits of 49/38/85 that make him among the top shooters in the state also. Ben takes the top spot in the city.
#2 DaShawn Jackson DaShawn Jackson 6'3" | SG Frederick Douglass | 2021 State KY , Frederick Douglass (2021) – DaShawn was really hitting his stride the last 6 weeks of his Junior season and building some momentum towards the spring AAU season. 21.6 PPG with 47/35/79 shooting splits is impressive and Jackson had Douglass into the regional tournament for the first time in school history.
#3 Tim Hall Tim Hall 6'6" | PF Westminster Catawba | 2023 State SC , Paul Laurence Dunbar (2022) – I stand behind my opinion that Hall is the best athlete in the state as far as just pure athleticism goes. As a basketball player, Tim keeps getting better and thanks to that athleticism, he has a high major D1 upside as a prospect. He led his team in scoring and rebounding as a Sophomore and if he can improve his perimeter shooting to become more than a slasher, Hall can be a big time player and prospect.
#4 Tanner Walton Tanner Walton 6'3" | CG Lexington Christian | 2022 State KY , Lexington Christian (2022) – Likely the MVP of the city for his team, Walton had a break out Sophomore year for the Eagles and stepped in admirably to do a Kyle Rode impression and lead the team in every major statistical category. Tanner has a high skill level and uses it to score against more athletic defenders.
#5 Jack Gohmann Jack Gohmann 6'3" | SG Lexington Catholic | 2022 State KY , Lexington Catholic (2022) – Catholic dominated the 11th region for the majority of the season and was undefeated against city teams. Gohmann stepped up as a solid second scoring option behind Ben Johnson Ben Johnson 6'3" | CG Lexington Catholic | 2021 State KY and he flashes potential of being even better over the next two years. His development will be interesting to watch as he splits his time between basketball and QB duties on the football field for the Knights.
#6 Myles Morones Myles Morones 6'1" | CG Bryan Station | 2021 State KY , Bryan Station (2021) – Morones is built like a football DB or receiver but he’s a solid basketball player in his own right. A good athlete with the potential to be a lockdown defender in addition to a capable scorer, Myles will look to lead Station back to the regional tournament next season.
#7 Kanye Henderson Kanye Henderson 6'3" | SG Henry Clay | 2022 State KY , Henry Clay (2022) – One of the biggest sleepers in the Junior class, Henderson could be the next Ques Warrick for Henry Clay if he reaches his potential. Kanye is long and athletic with a smooth offensive game and the chance to be a good defender when he’s all the way engaged. As Clay looks to reload moving forward, keep an eye on Kanye.
#8 Nick Spalding Nick Spalding 6'0" | PG Paul Laurence Dunbar | 2023 State KY , Paul Laurence Dunbar (2023) – The only freshman on the list, Spalding earned a bigger and bigger role this season at Dunbar and should be entrenched at the point guard spot for Dunbar for the remainder of his career.
#9 Trenton Grundy, Bryan Station (2021) – Trenton is a good shooter who can be very impactful when he plays with a great motor. A 38% shooter from deep, Grundy can be a 15-18 point per game scorer as a Senior if he can increase his field goal efficiency and finish through contact. He’s a good free throw shooter and capable defender when he’s locked in.
#10 Josh DuToit, Tates Creek (2021) – The third leading scorer and leading rebounder for the Commodores in his Junior campaign, the forward becomes the go-to scorer for Coach Gay’s team next season. As he continues to improve his shooting from three, Josh becomes an even better offensive threat heading into his Senior season.
