In Louisiana, many players have begun to receive offers from various schools near and far. In this article, we will take a look at notable all state guards from each class and what they have to offer schools on the next level.
Latrell Holly (6’2″, Alexandria High)
The first team all state and 5A championship game most outstanding player is a versatile guard. He can play both guard positions but is much better off the ball. Holly excels at rebounding for a guard. He has played football so he does not seem to mind the physicality in the paint. Holly has also proven that he can score at all three levels on the floor. For a college team looking for a physical guard at his height, Holly would not be a bad choise whatsoever.
Montonious Burrough (5’10”, Pleasant Hill)
Small guards have come back in vogue in recent years. If they can score, they are definitely in high demand. Burrough, a class C 1st team all state selection and title game MOP, is one of those guards. He proved that he can handle scoring and leading a team for those who had not seen him during Marsh Madness. Burrough is as quick as they come on offense and defense. He has the ability to get his score on one end and defend at a high level on the other. Schools in search for a change of pace type guard will love his game.
Kai Schnexnayder (6’0″, Patterson)
This 3A second team all state performer appears to be everything a next level school would want in a point guard. Schnexnayder can get to the rim almost at will. He can drop dimes when his drive is stopped, find shooters on the perimeter, and can knock down an outside shot. Schnexnayder is also a competitor on the defensive end from what I have seen on film. Colleges looking for a competitor on both ends of the floor should take a flyer on Schnexnayder.
Deondre Buggage Deondre Buggage 5'8" | CG H.L. Bourgeious | 2020 State LA (5’9″, H.L. Bourgeois)
Buggage is definitely a guard who has the ability to play and perform well on the next level. When taking a look at his film, it seems that no guard can stay in front of him. He is by his initial defender quickly and gets to the rim in the same fashion. Buggage keeps a defense off balance because he is very adept at handling the ball making defenders look bewildered and confused guarding him. His offensive game is exceptional and can be a helpful addition to a roster needing offensive punch.
Kalep Crane Kalep Crane 6'0" | CG Simsboro | 2020 State LA (6’1″, Simsboro)
Crane has been picking up offers from interested schools on multiple levels. The class B 1st team selection is a gifted offensive player who also loves playing defense. Crane takes (and makes) big shots during games and excels in transition. He gives 100 percent every time he is on the floor and leads by example diving for loss balls and making hustle plays. Crane is a winner as well claiming three state titles during his prep career. A school looking for a winner with his skills will definitely be happy adding him.
Jamal Davis Jamal Davis 5'11" | PG Ouachita Parish | 2020 State LA (6’0″, Ouachita)
Davis was a surprise, 2nd team all state selection in 5A. While he was a surprise to most, he definitely earned the selection. Davis guided 2nd ranked Ouachita by being a high IQ lead guard. He often took on many hats during the game and knew what they needed from him. Davis scored when the Lions needed offense, facilitated when others were going early, and defended when a key stop was needed. Guards who can be this versatile are always valuable. Next level schools can definitely benefit from a player of his caliber.
With virtual recruiting being in vogue at present, guards with high intelligence and great attributes are ones that will peak the interest of colleges and universities. There is still time for these guards, and others, to find a school as the signing period will begin on April 15th and extend through August 1st for Division I and Division II.
