2023 Rankings: Crafty Playmakers
We will look at some of the top rising prospects in the Class of 2023 with these stories to follow: Talented Bigs, 3-Point Specialists and Underrated Talents.
Greg Spate Greg Spate 6'6" | PG West Oaks | 2023 State FL is truly emerging down south at Oakland Park Northeast. The 6’5″ guard/forward is a true jack of all trades player. He can handle the rock with ease and his length is hard for defenses to slow down. Spate needs to fill out his thin frame, but he’s a very wise passer, he plays with a very good pace and can shoot and finish at the rim. He’s packed with upside.
Carl Cherenfant Carl Cherenfant 6'4" | CG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #68 Nation FL will breakout this summer and beyond. The 6’5″ guard is a very reliable outside shooter and an athlete whose smarts and calmness help him plenty. Cherenfant plays well off or on the ball and can do a variety of things defensively as a shot blocker and pest looking for steals. He will come along more consistently on offense after a varsity year under his belt. Cherenfant holds an offer from Western Kentucky.
Camerin James Camerin James 6'5" | CG Leesburg | 2023 State FL is athletic as they come. His true potential is as high as anyone in the 2023 class right now. At 6’4″, James is far from skinny and he has plenty of length and power to slow down teams as a shot blocker, core rebounder and a leaper overall. Offensively, the mid-range is his friend but he’s able to be a sound ballhandler and a good driver to the basket. He will be a known commodity soon.
Jamai Hager-Tejada Jamai Hager-Tejada 5'10" | CG Mater Lakes | 2023 FL & Anthony Floyd Anthony Floyd 5'7" | CG Hallandale | 2023 FL were the top two leading scorers at Mater Lakes as freshmen. Hager-Tejada, a 5’9″ point guard averaged a team-high 14.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG and 2.6 APG while Floyd, a 5’7″ guard averaged 13.8 PPG, 3.0 SPG, 2.9 APG and 2.8 RPG. It is hard to find a more energetic young guard duo around the state of Florida then these two. Hager-Tejada had 16 games with double digit points which included a 33-point outing against McArthur where he shot an eye-opening 22-of-26 from the free throw line. Floyd was highly steady reaching double digits in 20 of 26 games which featured a 25-point game against Carol City where he shot 7-of-10 from the field and netted 10 free throws. Hager-Tejada and Floyd both have serious wheels, can score from anywhere and love to fly defensively.
Kris Parker Kris Parker 6'6" | CG Crossroads | 2023 State #72 Nation FL was a stellar freshman up in North Florida’s Gadsden County. The 6’6″ guard/wing averaged 14.9 PPG and 3.9 RPG at Crossroad Academy. During team camps last June I kept hearing about the next big freshman in the Tallahassee area. He lived up to the call with just four games under 10 points while six 20 point games led by a 25-point night against Jefferson County. Parker is well on his way.
Edgerrin James Jr. Edgerrin James Jr. 6'1" | CG Olympia | 2023 State #87 Nation FL is the son of former NFL star running back Edgerrin James. Edgerrin Jr. also known as EJ was tasked with a key role out of the gates at Olympia. In charge of running the offense, the 5’10” guard proved to be able to get to the basket with his pure burst and feed others often. He certainly can stand to improve as a consistent shooter but he projects as a true playmaker.
Sean Combs Sean Combs 6'0" | CG Orlando Christian Prep | 2023 FL played sparingly for a new look Kissimmee Osceola group. Off the bench, the 6’1″ guard showed off his ability to get up and down the floor. You can see it in doses with him but as a young player, he wasn’t asked to do too much as a freshman. Expect Combs to take on a major role next season.
