We will look at some of the top 3-point shooters in the Class of 2023.
Tristan Gross Tristan Gross 6'4" | CG St. Pete | 2023 State #194 Nation FL is more than a 3-point shooter let’s get that out of the way right now. However, the 6’3″ guard proved throughout his freshman season that he can flat out hurt teams from beyond the arc. Averaging 14.9 PPG, Gross shot 42 percent from 3-point land, netting 69 3’s in total. He had 12 games with three or more 3-pointers which featured a 6-of-12 performance from deep against Pine Crest. Gross had a 28-point game out the gates against Central Florida Christian, shooting 4-of-6 from long range while adding a season-best 34 points against Countryside, making all four of his 3-point attempts. Gross can handle the rock, burn past defenders and hit the mid-range with ease. His upside is through the roof and he’s still growing plenty.
Daniel Fernandez tied for fifth in the country with 89 3-pointers on the season, shooting 43 percent overall. He ranked first in the state of Florida and lives from deep, shooting 208 3’s in total. The 5’10” shooting guard had 19 games with three more 3’s including two games with six and one with seven where he went 7-of-12. Fernandez averaged 14.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG and 3.2 APG for Belen Jesuit. He’s a scrappy player who loves to shoot from the corners. He is a well-formed outside shooter and can hit 3’s off quick feeds. He is a dangerous jumpshooter.
Gabriel Fajardo III is a playmaker who can certainly shoot with confidence. Averaging 13.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG anad 3.7 APG, the 6’3″ guard had 15 games in double digit points including 11 of the last 12 matchups of the season for Somerset Academy Silver Palms. Ranking 11th in the state for his class in 3’s made (36), he had a career-best 32 points which included 5-of-6 shots made from deep in a win over Somerset Academy South Homestead. Fajardo III is a good driver to the hoop as well and isn’t just a 3-point shooter but that is a strength of his.
Marcus Calvin Marcus Calvin 6'3" | CG Gibbs | 2023 FL certainly opened some eyes in St. Pete this season as a freshman. The 6’1″ guard is built like a power forward at 215 lbs., but he can burn you from deep as he shot 36 percent from long range, netting 44 3’s in total (ranked 5th in the state for 2023 players). Calvin averaged 7.8 PPG but heated up at the end of the year, recording double digit points in seven of the last 11 games. As he grows and adds muscle, the keen shooter will be able to drive and attack more often for a young Gibbs squad in the fall.
Dylan Diaz ranked 10th in the state in his class with 37 3’s made. The 6′ guard averaged 8.2 PPG and had 10 games with double digit points. Diaz had a season-best 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field against Belleview. He still has work to do with his consistency, but he is a true asset from outside for Lake Minneola.
Braeden Marshall finished eighth in the Florida freshmen class in total points, five spots behind Gross and one ahead of Fernandez. He averaged 14.3 PPG and made 36 3-pointers for Lake Mary which was the 13th most for the 2023 class in the state. At 5’10”, he is built and I’m sure football conditioning as a cornerback helps with that. But he’s also nimble on his feet, fast and in control of the offense like a true point guard. His jumper gets off rapidly.
Kevis Thomas averaged 14.0 PPG for Taylor County while also finishing 14th in the state in his class for 3-pointers made (35). Thomas, a 6′ guard shot 47 percent from deep and proved quickly that he could score in a variety of ways as a mid-range shooter and from deep. He reached double digit points in all but four games, highlighted by a 38-point performance against Wakulla where he shot 18-of-26 overall. Thomas is a true athlete who is a dual-threat quarterback for the football team as well.
