Prep Hoops has released its latest Colorado class of 2022 rankings update based on the 2019-20 season. The 2022 class is an interesting one as we had a significant shakeup in the Top-5 as well as plenty of movement throughout the rest of the rankings while adding prospects as well. Here, we focus on some of the classes’ top scoring guards.
Jaeton Hackley Jaeton Hackley 5'11" | PG Douglas County | 2022 State CO – Douglas County
Hackley comes into our newest update as one of the biggest stock boosters as he jumps into the Top-10 after a solid season showcasing that he can score at will. Hackley averaged 14.3 points as the leading scorer for Douglas County as a competitive combo-guard with upside. The 5’10 point guard scored in double figures in all but three games as he showed that he could score from all three levels. Hackley shot the 3-ball, got to the rim, showed that he could rebound(3.1 rpg), and got teammates involved (3.6 apg) as well. Hackley is one of the most polished players in the class as he is a talented guard that boards from the lead guard spot and also puts his teammates in spots to score. He is a player that does not back down from competition and proved it all season long. Hackley is the No. 8 player in the class and welcomes anyone that wants to try and take his spot.
Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO – St. Mary’s
Howery had one of the best overall seasons from any player in the state as there might not have been a player with the stat line that he had. Howery was one of the most challenging players to guard in all of 3A as he had an incredible all-around season. Howery was the stat leader in multiple categories out of the 2022 class and led the Pirates to a 19-5 record. The 6’0 point guard averaged an impressive 20.5 points, 8.5 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 steals a game. Those marks led ALL sophomores in every significant category. He is also a player that shoots exceptionally well as he knocked down the 3-ball, got to the free-throw line and made the defense guess on if he is shooting or passing to the open man. No other player in the state accounted for as much offense as Howery did as only a sophomore. I feel as if he should have made an All-State team, but he was named an All-State Honorable Mention. Next season I think that he will be a Top-3 3A player and ready to prove how special he is. Howery is the No. 9 player in the class and honestly made a case to be higher.
Jordan Reed Jordan Reed 6'5" | CG Manual | 2022 State CO – Manual
Jordan Reed Jordan Reed 6'5" | CG Manual | 2022 State CO is a proven winner, and in only his sophomore season, a state champ that had a chance to defend the title. Granted, Reed was not a big part of the team that won it all, but he did, however, learn from the player that came before him and took that as a time to take it all in. In his sophomore season, he was able to jump on the scene and prove that he is an explosive off of the ball scorer that can take over at times. Despite playing alongside one of the states better scorers, he was still able to score the ball relatively easily and show a complete game. Reed put up 14.9 points and five rebounds a game as a sophomore. He was the only other player to score in double figures for the ThunderBolts, and he answered the question of who carries the torch moving forward. Reed put up a career-high 24 points in Manual’s last game before the season was shut down and was starting to come into his own. Next season, I am confident in feeling that Reed will take 3A by storm as he will go into the season as one of the best scorers in the class. He has to be ready to beat constant double and triple teams and still be able to contribute from all three levels. He is the No.15 player in the class and could rise with a big season where he is the focal point of the offense.
Jordan McKay Jordan McKay 6'3" | SF Liberty | 2022 State CO – Liberty
McKay is a player that came into the season ranked at No.64, but with the work that he put in this season and the impact that he made, he jumped as far as anyone in the state. McKay was named to the Colorado Springs Metro League All-Conference team as a sophomore after putting up 14.3 points and 6.4 boards a game. The 6’3 wing was able to make his impact felt both inside and on the perimeter as an explosive guard that attacks the rim and is aggressive and lets his speed, size, and athleticism get him easy baskets. McKay averaged in double figures in the final seven games of the season, and you got to see his upside at times like his 28 point explosion against Palmer. McKay crashes the boards and gets out and running and is challenging to slow down in the open court. He is a player that will head into next season with high expectations for himself and is an under the radar prospect that has plenty to prove. For now, he is the No. 21 player in the class, which is a significant jump. Make sure to give him a look this season.
Aidan Kuhl Aidan Kuhl 6'0" | SG Rocky Mountain | 2022 State #245 Nation CO – Rocky Mountain
Kuhl was one of the most consistent scorers in the entire conference this season as he was able to lead the Lobos in scoring as only a sophomore. Kuhl was the conference’s 2nd leading scorer at 17.6 points a game, and he showed off the ability to knock it down from deep with open looks as well as get to the FT line. Kuhl is an excellent decision-maker that excels in iso situations because he can create for himself. He also knows how to read what the defense is giving him, and that opens up different looks for him. Kuhl can score in various ways and keeps the defense guessing as he has an excellent crossover, feel for the game, and is a high IQ player that scores with ease. When this smooth lefty is not scoring the basketball, he is getting others involved and playing the passing lanes for steals. Kuhl is an entertaining 6’0 combo-guard and No. 23 player in the class.
