Continue ReadingWith spring basketball likely shelved completely and the status of summer hoops still up in the air, we wanted to break down SoCal’s classes by position to see how deep each of them are. Here’s a closer look at the top small forwards in the rising senior class.
Peyton Watson Peyton Watson 6'7" | SF Long Beach Poly | 2021 State #11 Nation CA-S , Long Beach Poly – Watson was the easy choice for the top prospect in the 2021 class and, if we were to rank prospects in Southern California regardless of class, Watson would be in the running for the top spot on that list, as well. The rangy 6-foot-7 wing took his game to another level this season while becoming the go-to guy for the Jackrabbits. Watson can score efficiently at all three levels of the floor, played the point-forward role many times during the season and has defensive potential that is off the charts.
Tyler Powell Tyler Powell 6'5" | SF Ribet Academy | 2021 State #130 Nation CA-S , Ribet Academy – Powell was one of the keys to Ribet’s run to the CIF Southern Section Division 2A title and not because he was a high volume scorer, but rather due to how he impacts multiple aspects of the game. The 6-5 wing is a physical downhill driver and above the rim finisher who thrives in transition. But what stood out most about Powell this past season was his improved confidence as a three-point shooter. Powell also has the ability to guard multiple positions at the high school level and rebounds his area well.
Jalen Pitre Jalen Pitre 6'8" | SF Long Beach Poly | 2021 State CA-S , Long Beach Poly – Pitre is one of the more intriguing prospects in the area because of his combination of size, length and athleticism to go along with the fact that he’s a year younger than most of his classmates. The 6-foot-8 wing showed his versatility at Gahr during his junior season as a guy who rebounded and pushed the break, while also overpowering smaller defenders en route to paint finishes. Pitre needs to become a more consistent three-point shooter to play the three at the Division 1 level.
Josh O’Garro Josh O’Garro 6'5" | SF Santa Clarita Christian | 2021 State CA-S , Santa Clarita Christian – O’Garro is another who stands out because of his versatility on both ends of the floor. At 6-5, O’Garro displayed the ability to guard 1-3 and his skill-set allowed him to play 1-3 on the offensive end. His position at the next level is likely on the wing as a small forward because of his tendency and comfortability to attack the basket off the bounce or slash his way into open space and finish around the rim.
Corey Cofield II Corey Cofield II 6'5" | SF Birmingham | 2021 State CA-S , Birmingham – Cofield can be categorized among the “high motor” category of SoCal prospects and that might be an understatement. You can count on the 6-5 wing to give 100 percent effort each time he takes the floor and it results in productivity. Like Powell above, Cofield is best in transition where he can get downhill and finish at the rim with power or finesse. The next step for Cofield in order to reach his full potential is to refine his perimeter shooting stroke.
[player_tooltip player_id="680213" first="Denim" last="Dawson"] made the move from Colony to Orange Lutheran bringing with him high-level athleticism that helps him defend and finish in transition.Denim Dawson Denim Dawson 6'5" | SF Orange Lutheran | 2021 State CA-S , Orange Lutheran – Dawson is one of the more explosive athletes in the region and he uses it to provide countless highlight-reel finishes on the break. The 6-5 wing is also a versatile defender and good rebounder for his positions. Dawson’s length and quick hands help him tip and deflect passes, harass ball handlers, and create turnovers. Like Cofield, Dawson must improve on his catch-and-shoot ability from three-point range.
Derrien Carter-Hollinger Derrien Carter-Hollinger 6'4" | SF Foothills Christian | 2021 State CA-S , Foothills Christian – What we like most about Carter-Hollinger is how he impacts the game in a variety of ways. The 6-foot-4 wing can rebound, push the break, and has the vision and passing ability to get teammates the ball when and where they want it to be most successful. Carter-Hollinger brings a veteran and high IQ presence to the floor to go along with his ability to finish around the basket.
