Unfortunately, we only did five players for three teams, leaving plenty of guys who deserve the recognition out and even “snubbing” a few guys because of the limited space. Not to worry however, as we’ve come up with a list of honorable mentions (yes, we know there are some that got snubbed here too). Below, you’ll find 9 junior guards that were heavily considered for the All State team.
Allen Strothers Allen Strothers 6'2" | PG Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’2” PG | Menchville
Strothers was a tough one for us to leave off because he was the straw that stirred the drink for Menchville and they had a terrific season. The 6’2” point guard is a two way impact guy with great length and athleticism, and he’s a true floor general that knows where his teammates always are and can create for them as easily as he can create for himself. He finished the season averaging close to 15 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists per game.
Elvin Edmonds Elvin Edmonds 6'2" | CG Hopewell | 2021 State VA | 6’2” G | Hopewell
If Strothers was hard to leave off, it was equally hard to leave Edmonds off as the Class 3 Region B Player of the Year was as consistent as anyone in the Richmond area. The 6’2” combo guard scored it at a high clip all year, played both guard positions and was double teamed and game planned for almost every game. He averaged an impressive 21.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.9 steals per game.
Quadir Pettaway Quadir Pettaway 6'0" | PG Woodside | 2021 State VA | 6’0” PG | Miller School
Pettaway was on a Miller School team that wasn’t very deep which gave him ample opportunities to score the basketball from the point guard position. He’s a guy who’s crafty off the bounce and can get to his spots, he can make shots from all three levels and he consistently produced throughout the year. He averaged 16 points and 4 assists per game this season.
Jonas Sanker Jonas Sanker 6'2" | CG Covenant | 2021 State VA | 6’1” G | Covenant
Sanker was quietly one of the best players in the Charlottesville area this year and almost singlehandedly led Covenant to the VISAA D3 State Semifinals. He’s a big and strong guard that’s an athletic finisher through traffic, he can get to his spots and finish and brings it on the defensive end as well. He’s also a standout on the football field and was named VISAA First Team All State in both sports this year.
Jacob Cooper Jacob Cooper 5'9" | PG Green Run | 2021 State VA | 5’9” PG | Green Run
Cooper was named the Beach District Player of the Year after help lead Green Run to the state playoffs for the first time in a while, and subsequently were named state champions as well. The 5’9” Cooper isn’t the biggest guy on the court but he makes a big impact with the way he runs the team, makes shots and makes everyone around him better. He’s a natural born leader that’s an extension of the coach on the court and can do many different things for them on both sides of the ball.
Christian Moore Christian Moore 6'1" | CG Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’0” G | Cape Henry
Moore could make a great case for being snubbed because he was the leader of a young Cape Henry group that made it to the state quarterfinals as a 5 seed and has them looking like the Cape of old. The 6’0” combo guard scored it at a high rate all season long playing both on and off the basketball, and he was a consummate leader, bringing it against the best of the best. He was named First Team All State in the VISAA D1 classification.
Ricky Goode-Wright Ricky Goode-Wright 5'10" | PG James Monroe | 2021 State VA | 6’0” PG | James Monroe
Goode-Wright continues to have an exceptional career at James Monroe even though they went through a rebuilding year this year. The Yellow Jacket’s junior guard didn’t have very much help but he got it done leading on both ends, averaging 20.1 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and around 4 steals per game. He’s already broke the James Monroe scoring record and currently sits at 1,250 points, giving him an outside shot at 2,000 for his career if he has a terrific senior season.
Jakari Wilkins Jakari Wilkins 5'9" | PG Williamsburg Christian | 2021 State VA | 5’8” PG | Williamsburg Christian
While I didn’t get a chance to watch WCA this year in person Wilkins impressed me all summer and fall long and his tape looks fantastic as well. He’s a smaller guard but he’s lightning quick, changes directions well and changes speeds well and he’s a dual threat guy that can score it and make others around him better as well.
Grayson Honaker Grayson Honaker 6'0" | CG Hargrave | 2021 State VA | 6’0” G | Honaker
Honaker may be from a small town in the southwest corner of VA, but his resume will stack up with pretty much anyone. He had to do it all for his team this year and he did just that with a jaw dropping stat line of 29.4 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game. He scored 62 points in a game against Claiborne County of Tennessee hitting 17 three-pointers, and he was named First Team All Region and Russell County Player of the Year.
