Updated 2020 Rankings FREE Overview
It’s the last time we’re going to be doing rankings for the class of 2020, and after three plus years of putting it all together it’s been one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. Over the years the Prep Hoops Virginia team has seen hundreds, close to thousands, of players from all over the state. We compiled a database and have updated it for years, but we still are likely to have left plenty of players out.
We considered over 250 players for the rankings, and will be coming out with content breaking down our decisions, showing some new faces, biggest risers, commitment reports and some of the best available guys in the state. For now, we give you a free preview of the final 2020 rankings, which you can find here.
Oak Hill Newcomers Dominate Top 10
We haven’t done a new rankings since last summer so their have been plenty of newcomers and changes as well. Oak Hill brought in a number of new players, as they do every year, and have six guys in the top 10 for a team that finished #6 in the country. LSU commit Cam Henry, one of the few returners, slides up to number two in our rankings, while newcomers K.K. Robinson K.K. Robinson 6'1" | PG Oak Hill Academy | 2020 State #78 Nation VA (#4), Jamari Sibley Jamari Sibley 6'8" | SF Oak Hill Academy | 2020 State #148 Nation VA (#5), Darrius Maddox (#7) and Bradley Ezewiro Bradley Ezewiro 6'8" | C Oak Hill Academy | 2020 State #244 Nation VA (#8) all make their debuts. Fellow Oak Hill returner Darrick Jones Darrick Jones 6'5" | SF Oak Hill Academy | 2020 State #283 Nation VA rounds out the top 10 for us.
Guys Coaches Are Calling About
While there are plenty of guys who have signed (we’ll get to that) and tons of still available prospects (we’ll get to that as well), there are a few guys who coaches continue to call me about. Here’s a look at five seniors coaches have been blowing me up about.
Josiah Freeman Josiah Freeman 6'4" | SG Manassas Park | 2020 State #298 Nation VA | 6’3” WG | Manassas Park (#11 Overall)
Freeman had some turmoil this year, leaving Paul VI midseason and decommitting from Buffalo where he pledged during the summer. However, he’s had a lot of people ask about him and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was heavily touted by both D1s and JUCOs hoping he falls through the cracks. He’s a gifted shooter with a strong frame and has performed at a high level in the past.
Jordan Battle Jordan Battle 6'3" | CG Norfolk Collegiate | 2020 State VA | 6’3” G | Norfolk Collegiate (#12 Overall)
Battle has been the buzz of the state since he took the Oaks to the VISAA D2 State Championship and had performances of 35 points in the semifinals and 28 in the finals. The big guard has a resume that beats many in the state, he knows the game very well and produces every night, but for some reason I can’t understand he’s getting all of the calls but none of the offers.
Chaunce Jenkins Chaunce Jenkins 6'3" | SG Menchville | 2020 State VA | 6’4” WG | Mencvhille (#18 Overall)
Jenkins has improved a crazy amount and has sprouted to 6’4” and grown into his body athletically, making him a guy that many believe can contribute early with his college ready size and athleticism. He’s improved his skill set a lot over the past year or so but still has a lot more he can improve on with time and work, making him very desirable for D1 coaches. He picked up a recent offer from Wichita State.
Ismael Plet Ismael Plet 6'7" | PF VES | 2020 State VA | 6’8” PF | Virginia Episcopal School (#23 Overall)
Plet has been a steady and productive player for the past few years but he’s stuck between being a power forward and a center and doesn’t stretch the floor very well. However, quite a few division one coaches have called me after watching his tape and seeing his athleticism, strength and high motor that he uses to dominate the paint with.
Jamel Melvin Jamel Melvin 6'9" | PF Potomac School | 2020 State VA | 6’9” PF | Potomac School (#25 Overall)
Another four man that coaches are starting to call more and more about, Melvin showed that he can dominate on both ends this year at Potomac School and his highlights are circulating on social media and have many coaches asking about him. He’s a long and athletic guy who is pretty versatile on the offensive end, protects the rim defensively and still has room to get better.
Still Sleeping? Wake UP!
A look at five guys that have produced time and time again and still for some reason aren’t getting recruited.
Amir Nesbitt Amir Nesbitt 6'0" | PG Miller School | 2020 State #434 Nation VA | 6’1” PG | Miller School (#22 Overall)
Nesbitt is a guy who had a lot of success early in his career at Bishop Sullivan and Virginia Academy and held a litany of early offers, and despite playing well on the Adidas Circuit last year and as a senior this year for Miller he’s still without a commitable division one offer. He’s a two way impact guy that guards the other team’s best guard, can run the show or step off the ball and makes shots and he’s a high character kid with a good understanding of the game.
Karl Chavis Karl Chavis 6'5" | PF Oscar Smith | 2020 State VA | 6’6” F | Oscar Smith (#27 Overall)
Everyone says that small ball is the future of basketball, but when you get a really good small ball guy like Chavis everyone is concerned about his size. The 6’6” hybrid forward is an athletic freak that played all over the floor for Smith, he plays with energy and can make plays at the rim on both ends and he can step out and shoot the basketball as well.
Tyler Henderson Tyler Henderson 5'8" | PG LC Bird | 2020 State VA | 5’8” PG | LC Bird (#28 Overall)
Another guy who gets labeled very early because of his size, Henderson has been one of the top point guards in the Richmond area and he’s matched up with guys more highly touted than him and often gets the best of them or pushes them to the limits. He’s a gym rat that brings it every day on both ends of the floor, he’s a natural floor general and helped a young Bird group grow and improve all season. He’s a guy that even if he isn’t ready to play immediately, he’s going to push every guard on your team to improve the moment he steps on campus.
Malachi Poindexter Malachi Poindexter 6'2" | CG STAB | 2020 State VA | 6’2” CG | STAB (#35 Overall)
Poindexter has battled injuries his entire career from when he was at Louisa to the last couple of years at STAB but when he’s been healthy he’s shown great improvement on the basketball and is a very talented shot maker. He’s a dual threat guy that’s get decent size, makes good reads out of the pick-and-roll and can hang 30 on any given night with his ability to create and makes shots from all three levels.
William Lee William Lee 5'10" | PG Blue Ridge | 2020 State VA | 5’10” CG | Blue Ridge (#37 Overall)
The Queens native came in with a reputation as a smaller scoring guard, and that’s a reputation he lived up to very well over the past few years. He’s instant offense that can go on runs by himself and can make tough and contested shots despite his height, and he really bought in on the defensive end since he arrived at Blue Ridge and learned how to use his strength and quickness on both ends of the floor.
