AVERY JACKSON is a 6’0 Guard – Sophomore at Frisco Memorial High School. When asked about his outlook on this season, his response was a common theme we continue to hear from Memorial High School players: “this is the second school year for Memorial and we are making a run for the playoffs”.
Jackson’s solid defense, extended shooting range as well as his rising free throw percentage sets him apart from other players in the same position. He credits Tyler Relph, Booker Woodfox, and PGC for his continuous skill development.
His work ethics consist of putting up 500 3-pt shots prior to practice, and 50 free throws after practice. Avery shared with me the story of his grandmother, who passed away in 2018. He recalled the last thing she said to him was “Go play that ball”; and he uses that as his driving factor on the court. Jackson says he believes pressure is a myth, and he focuses on building his confidence through continuous practice. Currently his high school averages are: 12.4 ppg, 1.3 stls, 3.2 rpg, 36% from the three point range, and 77% at the free throw line. He is getting it done in the classroom as well, with a GPA of 3.6. He has not yet received his SAT score.
The most challenging part of basketball for the 6′-0” guard is guarding bigger and taller opponents. Having a small body frame makes it difficult to hold position on an opponent, he said. But nonetheless, he continues to work hard, and feels his defense has improved the most this year. He continues to put in extra time on improving his off-dribble shooting.
When relating basketball to everyday life, leadership and team work is applied, said Jackson. He would love to play D1 basketball and hopes to play professionally as well.
Avery’s recruiting is starting to pick up as he is beginning to understand the process. When asked what is one thing you would like college coaches to know about you, he enthusiastically says he is a Christian, humble, very coach-able and eager to leverage his talents as a team player. When the time comes to select a college, he wants to study Law or Engineering. “Playing for a school where my skills can best be utilized not only for myself, but for my team as a whole is my desire”, he concluded.
Frisco Memorial Coach Quinton says Avery is a deadly shooter that only needs to see one go in to get him hot, “the funny part is it doesn’t have to be his that goes in”. He is a long player that sits on defense and runs and finishes well in transition. When asked about the person, Coach Quinton believes without a doubt that Avery Jackson is a name to get to know and ensures that we will hear that name a lot in the next two years at Memorial High as well as at the next level. He summed it up this way: “a phenomenal student that gets it done on and off the court. A young man that does everything the right way”.
We wish Avery blessings in his future endeavors.
