Sometimes freshmen are able to step in right away and make a big impact. Older players take on a bigger role. Here’s a few additional players I’ve seen this year from the CIF Southern Section Gold Coast League who look poised to continue their upward trajectory.
1. T.J. Muhammad – Crossroads 2021
Muhammad has taken a big step since his freshman year. He didn’t play much on Crossroads 2018 state championship team, but he’s improved every year since. He’s emerged as one of the team’s leaders on the court and is always looking to make the right play. He can play both guard positions; he looks to pass and involve teammates and he knows when to score. Can shoot well from three. Good defensive player who gives 100 percent on every play.
2. Dante Ogbu – Viewpoint 2023
Ogbu just completed his freshman year and he should continue his ascent as one of the top players in the league. He’s a combo guard with a penchant for scoring. He can run the break in transition and he finishes strong at the rim. He can make plays off the dribble and has good court awareness. Can shoot from the three-point line. Solid passer.
3. Bronny James – Sierra Canyon 2023
James was solid in his limited role this season as the Trailblazers main guard off the bench. With all the graduating seniors, it’s not hard to envision him as the starting point guard next season. He already has a solid feel for the game and is comfortable with the ball in his hands. Always looks to make the right pass. Good three-point shooter. Tries hard on the defensive end.
4. Henri Adiassa – Crossroads 2022
Adiassa remains one of the most intriguing prospects in the Los Angeles area. His size and length in post in near unmatched. He’s a strong defender and anchor in the middle. Good rebounder especially on the offensive end. Scoring wise, he has a couple of strong moves and footwork in the paint. He’s in the mold of a real, old school type big man.
5. Kyle Beedon – Campbell Hall 2021
Beedon is poised to have a strong senior year. He’s able to play both point guard and shooting guard. He’s a lights out shooter from behind the arc. Spots up well and with a quick release as defenders are rushing out at him. Can handle the ball and do a little playmaking. He plays hard defensively and sometimes matches up against bigger guards.
6. Amado Coleman – Paraclete 2021
Coleman plays with a lot of strength. He’s forward who can sometimes play a little guard. He’s very athletic and good in the open court sprinting ahead of the defense. He’s very active around the rim; he uses his strength well to finish around contact. He’s a strong rebounder on both ends. Able to draw contact and get himself to the free-throw line.
