Sometimes freshmen are able to step in right away and make a big impact. Older players take on a bigger role. Here’s a few players I’ve seen this year from the CIF City Section Coliseum League who look poised to continue their upward trajectory.
1. KJ Bradley KJ Bradley 5'11" | PG Crenshaw | 2021 State CA-S – Crenshaw 2021
Bradley is everything you’d want in a point guard and floor leader. He has great court awareness and vision. He’s a solid ball-handler, especially when under defensive pressure. He can find the seams in the defense and create shots for his teammates. He has a nice floater and can get into the lane and to the rim. Has shooting range out to three-point range. Pretty good defensive player.
2. Ernest Blackwell – View Park 2021
Blackwell was a key player this season on a View Park team that made it to the section semifinals. He is a utility and glue guy who did well complimenting the team’s main players. Look for him to take an expanded role next season. He’s a good spot up shooter from three-point range with a quick release. Good corner three shooter. Makes hustles plays; knows his role and doesn’t deviate.
3. Kaleb Lacount – King/Drew 2022
Lacount emerged as a sophomore as the team’s main point guard. He keeps the ball moving offensively and doesn’t let the offense bog down and stagnate. He pushes the pace well on the break with good court vision. Offensively, he can make plays off the dribble and get to the rim. He can also shoot well from three. Definitely a player to watch out for.
4. Brandon Burks – Washington Prep 2021
Burks has the tools to be a strong 3&D type player who can also shoulder a little bit more of the load offensively. He’s long an athletic on the defensive end and can time his blocks well. Has the ability to be a defensive stopper. He can shoot the three well and can spot up or shoot with defenders rushing at him. He’s a good rebounder that’s active at times around the rim.
