With that in mind, there are some serious scorers that should be have been looked at for the Mr. Basketball race. Today, I take a look at the 4 names that I felt had the best arguments to compete for Mr. Basketball from the Southeast and East parts of Ohio
Trey Robertson (2022) Waverly- When you first see Robertson, you may ask me why I have a 5’9 guard as a possible candidate for Mr. Basketball. Watch him play and you’ll see. Robertson has a ton of speed and explosive first step off the drive. His smaller frame allows him to get by defenders on the perimeter and he can finish consistently at the rim with a soft touch. The Tigers top player scored 22 points per game this past season, but his unselfishness and ability to create open shots for his teammates impressed me as well. With two additional years left in high school, Robertson could be a household name in the Mr. Basketball race in the future.
Cam Evans (2020) Zane Trace- The Pioneers backcourt leader scored the ball in doses for Zane Trace this season. Having a strong frame and build, Evans knows how to use his body on the offensive end of the floor. He can knockdown shots on the perimeter and specifically impressed with his ability to get shots off with extremely tight defensive presence. His crossover and between-the-legs dribble are fluid and quick, allowing him the extra step to get a quick shot off. He doesn’t take a play off and is persistent to score on 2nd and 3rd chance shots. His determination and drive is what I look for in a senior leader.
Kyle Sexton (2021) Glenwood- In comparison to the other Southeast Ohio prospects on this list, Sexton looks the most like a collegiate prospect with his size. At 6’5, he’s big for a guard but has shown he can score from multiple levels. He demonstrated an ability to play with his back to the basket as well distribute the basketball from the post. He may not be the highest scorer on this list, but he has the most upside as a two-way player at this point. D2 and NAIA programs have already begun reaching out to him after a strong ending to his junior campaign.
Luke Powell Luke Powell 6'3" | SG Barnesville | 2020 State OH (2020) Barnesville- The highest scoring prospect on this list, Powell put up 33 points per game this season for Barnesville. His most impressive attribute is his outside shooting stroke. His catch-and-shoot mentality is intense as is forces defenses to come defend him high on the perimeter. His size and skillset lets him score at the rim when the outside shot is taken away. Powell has committed to West Liberty University.
