It has been a wild tournament in the South Jersey Group 4 bracket. How often do we see a No. 16 seed in the semi-finals? Well that is what we have after Egg Harbor took down No. 9 Williamstown for their second straight upset victory. There will be nothing short of drama on Saturday night in the semis. Before we get there, let’s take a look back to Thursday night and acknowledge the standouts from the quarterfinal round.
DJ Germann (2023) | Egg Harbor
How about a freshman leading the way for the 16th seed? Egg Harbor took down Williamstown 49-40 in the quarterfinal behind a game-high 21 points from Germann. He also notched four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. What a run it has been for Egg Harbor and it is not done yet.
Jake Green (2022) | Cherry Hill East
Cherry Hill East advanced after taking down Eastern 66-54. Their sophomore sensation finished with 28 points to lead the way. This game was never in serious danger for Cherry Hill East and Green made sure of it. He was able to make big plays whenever his team needed one.
Stephen Byard Stephen Byard 6'7" | PF Atlantic City | 2020 State NJ (2020) | Atlantic City
It was a solid win for Atlantic City over Cherokee. Byard finished with 18 points to lead the way. This is after scoring 26 points against Kingsway in the first round. Byard is getting hot at the right time for Atlantic City. This is the type of performance that can lead a team through a bracket and Byard has done so over the first two rounds.
Gavin Gibson Gavin Gibson 6'4" | SG Cherokee | 2020 State NJ (2020) | Cherokee
Cherokee suffered a 15-point loss to Atlantic City in the quarterfinal. They just could not get anything going on offense. Outside of Gibson of course. The senior scored 22 of his team’s 38 points in the game. HE did his best to keep Cherokee in the game but Atlantic City was too much.
Derek Simpson Derek Simpson 6'3" | PG Lenape | 2022 State NJ (2022) | Lenape
Lenape did not struggle in the quarterfinal. They took home a 72-40 win over Clearview. Simpson was in full control throughout the entire game. The sophomore finished with 18 points, eight assists, and three steals in the game. At 6’1, Simpson has good size at the point guard position and this allows him to be effective on both sides of the floor.
