Roster builders at every level have become infatuated with constructing their teams around a trio of players who can carry a program. Putting together a well-rounded starting five and a solid bench are obviously paramount. That said, having three separate individuals who can single handily change the game while also being able to play alongside one another is often the difference between a good team and a great team. This rings true in the NBA, NCAA, as well as high school.
With that in mind, here are three of the best trios from the 2019-20 high school season:
Dickinson
Tramon Mark Tramon Mark 6'5" | SG Dickinson | 2020 State #76 Nation TX – 2020 6’6 Shooting Guard (Nike Houston Hoops (EYBL))
Marcus Williams Marcus Williams 6'2" | SG Dickinson | 2020 State #410 Nation TX – 2020 6’2 Combo Guard (Team Harden (Adidas))
Deuce Guidry Deuce Guidry 5'8" | PG Dickinson | 2020 State TX – 2020 5’8 Point Guard (Team Harden (Adidas))
Dickinson’s big three was comprised of three senior guards who could all score at a high level. Mark was an assassin from mid-range while also being able to score at will off the drive. Williams and Guidry complimented him extraordinarily well due to their ability to drain triples. These three were fearless at both ends of the court and always knew when it was their respective turn to take over a game. Mark will be taking his talents to Houston, but the other two studs are still uncommitted and deserving of a spot on a college roster.
Dallas St. Mark’s
Harrison Ingram Harrison Ingram 6'7" | SF St. Mark's | 2021 State #15 Nation TX – 2021 6’7 Small Forward (Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas))
Andrew Laczkowski Andrew Laczkowski 6'6" | SF St. Mark's | 2020 State #385 Nation TX – 2020 6’6 Small Forward (Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas))
Colin Smith Colin Smith 6'8" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State #115 Nation AZ – 2022 6’7 Small Forward (Nike Drive Nation E15)
Ingram is the No. 1 ranked player in our 2021 rankings due to his all-around game as a scorer, passer, rebounder, and defender. Laczkowski was an intelligent senior three-and-D prospect who loved to take advantage of mismatches. His high IQ became even more evident with his commitment to the University of Pennsylvania. Smith was the baby of the group, but his upside is through the roof thanks to the versatility he already possessed as a sophomore. This threesome’s unique ability to individually and collectively impact games in a variety of ways is likely why they ended the season as Southwest Preparatory Conference champions.
John Paul II
Jaylon Tyson Jaylon Tyson 6'6" | SF John Paul II | 2021 State #66 Nation TX – 2021 6’5 Small Forward (Method Academy)
Nate Dominick Nate Dominick 6'5" | SF John Paul II | 2020 State TX – 2020 6’5 Small Forward (Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas))
Jalen Tot Jalen Tot 5'10" | PG John Paul II | 2020 State TX – 2020 5’11 Point Guard (Method Academy)
This trio is a bit more traditional when compared to the previous two I mentioned. It consisted of an elite wing, a multiskilled forward, and a crafty point guard. Tyson headlined this group as a dynamic prospect who could score from the perimeter in the half court as well as in transition with acrobatic layups and powerful dunks. Dominick’s unselfish style of play and three-point shooting made him an excellent frontcourt mate for Tyson. Last but not least, Tot’s speed with the ball combined with his tremendous decision making on the break helped round out this terrific trio. They took home the 6A TAPPS state title thanks in large part to these three prospects.
