Now we shift our focus from offense to defense with the elite lockdown perimeter and post defenders from District 28. Using stats such as steals, blocks, and charges, we’ve compiled the top frontcourt and backcourt defenders from this past season.
Here are the top five defenders from District 28-6A during the 2019-2020 season:
Isaac Orozco – 5-10 Guard – O’Connor (2021)
Orozco topped all guards in steals with 65 total on the season, while averaging a district best 2.0 steals per game. Not only was he good at anticipating passes and pickpocketing opponents, but Orozco was also second in the district at drawing charges and was charted with 13 total charges across 32 games played.
Nick Vann – 6-0 Guard – Warren (2020)
Vann joins Orozco as the only two players in the district to draw over 10+ charges, with Vann having the most with 14 over 32 games. Vann was also second in both steals and steals per game, averaging 1.7 per contest and totaling 54 takeaways on the season.
Ze’Rik Onyema Ze’Rik Onyema 6'7" | C San Antonio John Jay | 2020 State TX – 6-7 Forward – Jay (2020)
Onyema led the district in both points and rebounds and continues here on defense with a district best 2.2 blocks per game and 66 total swats on the season. His anticipation, bounce, and length is tailor-made for the defensive side of the court as he was an elite rim protector during his senior year.
Angelo Samudio – 6-3 Forward – Stevens (2021)
Finishing second in both blocks per game and total blocks, Samudio was rock solid in the paint this season as a post defender. Through 30 games he totaled 43 blocks, with a 1.4 per/game average.
Matthew Owens – 6-6 Forward – Warren (2020)
Owens was only the third player in the district to have 30+ blocks on the season and to average over 1 per contest. With a 6-6 frame, Owens was hard to get past in the post and at the rim as he averaged 1.2 blocks per game and had 40 swats on the season.
